Changes to the 2022 Subaru Models

Liz Kim | Dec 09, 2021

While most other car companies neglect their car lineup to shower attention on their utility vehicles, Subaru, which has always marched to the beat of a unique drum, gives two of their car models—the sporty BRZ and the athletic WRX—significant redesigns. But fear not, for the popular and practical Forester benefits from a good-sized makeover as well. Also, Subaru toughens up the Outback and Forester with Wilderness models, increasing their considerable off-road talents.

All eyes will be on the 2023 Solterra electric vehicle, set to debut next year; it will be Subaru's entry into an all-electric future.

2022 Subaru Ascent Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

For 2022, Subaru's largest model, the 3-row Ascent SUV, debuts a new Onyx Edition that features blacked-out trim inside and out. The Star-Tex upholstery is unique to the Onyx, as are the black 20-inch wheels. The Sport package is no longer available. Otherwise, the Ascent carries on into 2022 with no other changes and is still motivated by a turbocharged, 260-horsepower, 2.4-liter inline-4 engine and comes in base and Premium trim levels.

2022 Subaru BRZ Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

The BRZ, the only Subaru with two doors and rear-wheel drive, enters its second generation for 2022. Along with a new chassis with a 50-percent improvement in torsional rigidity over the previous version, it sports a new look inside and out, a 2.4-liter I4 making 228 hp, and more sophisticated safety and infotainment technology. It comes in Premium and Limited trim levels.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru's Crosstrek gets no changes for the 2022 model year and continues in Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels. You may still choose between a 152-hp 2.0-liter I4, a 182-hp 2.5-liter I4, or a combined 148-hp plug-in hybrid variant that provides 17 miles of electric-only range.

2022 Subaru Forester Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru gives the Forester a refreshed front fascia, along with a new camera to aid the SUV's advanced driving assistance systems and an automatic emergency steering system. In addition, the climate control system features an available hand-gesturing function, and Subaru upgrades the brakes.

The big news for the year is the Forester Wilderness model that increases ground clearance to 9.2 inches and features greater breakover, departure, and approach angles for more dexterity over the rough stuff. All-terrain tires and tweaks to the all-wheel-drive (AWD) system increase traction, while the Wilderness-exclusive exterior and interior badging and trim make it stand out. You'll also find ladder-style roof rails and crossbars.

2022 Subaru Impreza Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru's compact Impreza sedan and hatchback debut Sapphire Blue Pearl as a new color, while the Limited trim level is now only available as a hatchback. Otherwise, 2022 has no changes in store for the Impreza, which continues in Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trim levels.

2022 Subaru Legacy Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

For 2022, the base Legacy sedan receives black machine-finished 17-inch wheels, while rear passengers of the Premium and Sport trim levels will enjoy their own heating and cooling outlets. The Sport trim level also receives blind-spot warning with automatic reverse braking and a power moonroof on the standard features list.

2022 Subaru Outback Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru goes even more rugged for 2022 with the introduction of the Outback Wilderness, which raises the vehicle's already considerable 8.7-inch ground clearance to 9.5 inches and modifies the bumpers for enhanced approach, breakover, and departure angles for more off-road capability. Subaru also modifies the AWD system for more traction. Additionally, the Outback features unique exterior and interior design elements, has a raised laddery-type roof rack, and gets special upholstery.

The regular Outback in Premium trim gets air vents for the rear seats, and the base model adds LED fog lamps as standard equipment.

2022 Subaru WRX Changes - Find the best Subaru deals!

Subaru's vigorous WRX sedan is all-new for 2022. The fifth-generation rally-raised sports car is motivated by a turbocharged, 271-hp 2.4-liter I4, with power delivered to the AWD system through a 6-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission. Subaru improves the car's handling through a stiffer chassis and lower center of gravity compared to the previous WRX. As with every new car, the latest WRX is chock-full of new infotainment and safety technologies, including an 11.6-inch touchscreen.

Subaru has not released any information about the singularly athletic STI as of press time.
