Changes to the 2022 Mazda Models

Jessica Shea Choksey | Dec 10, 2021

The most significant change to the 2022 Mazda model line is the addition of the brand's first electric vehicle (EV), the MX-30 crossover. Mazda's maiden voyage into electrification should open doors to future EVs across the model line.

New trim levels appear for the Mazda3 compact sedan and hatchback and the CX-5 and CX-9 crossovers. The two crossovers also receive standard all-wheel drive (AWD) across all trims. Although the MX-5 Miata roadster and the CX-30 subcompact crossover return for 2022, no information on changes or new packaging was available as we prepared this article for publication.

The Mazda product portfolio shrinks slightly as the brand discontinues the Mazda6 sedan and CX-3 subcompact crossover for 2022.

The Mazda3 sedan and hatchback undergo only one notable change for the new model year. The longstanding and fun-to-drive small car receives a new Carbon Edition trim level, slotting between the Preferred and Premium packages. Under the hood, the Carbon Edition brings the familiar 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G I-4 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Its trim-specific gray metallic paint and gloss black wheels juxtapose a red leather interior for a unique look and feel. And a Bose 12-speaker sound system elevates the cabin experience. For 2022, the Mazda3 model range is pricier at every trim level.

The CX-30 subcompact crossover will return for 2022. However, no information on changes or new packaging was available as we prepared this article for publication.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Changes - Find the best Mazda deals!

The Mazda CX-5 compact crossover returns for 2022 with two new trim levels, an enhanced drivetrain, chassis upgrades, and standard AWD across all trims. The new 2.5 Turbo trim takes the place of the previous Grand Touring Reserve and features gloss black exterior elements and red upholstery. The new top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Signature trim features bright silver-finished wheels and Nappa leather seating for a premium appearance inside and out.

Although both powertrains are carryover, the automaker improved their 6-speed transmission to be smoother and more seamless. There's also a new drive-mode selector and general suspension upgrades for improved vehicle dynamics.

2022 Mazda CX-9 Changes - Find the best Mazda deals!

For 2022, the Mazda CX-9 midsize SUV receives standard I-Activ AWD across all trim levels. In terms of content, the CX-9 Touring enjoys seating upgrades all around, including black or sand color leather first and second-row seats, a 6-way power front passenger's seat, and an enhanced second-row slide-and-tilt function for easier access to the third row. Other additions to the Touring package include a power liftgate, advanced keyless entry, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink.

There's also a new CX-9 Touring Plus trim that combines all the features of the Touring and the Touring Premium while adding ventilated front seats, a power driver's seat with memory, black 20-inch aluminum wheels, gloss black front grille, and aluminum roof rails.

2022 Mazda MX-30 Changes - Find the best Mazda deals!

The all-new 2022 Mazda MX-30 compact crossover is the brand's first electric vehicle, but its 100 miles of all-electric range pales compared to most new EVs that offer 200-300 miles of travel distance between charges. Front-wheel-drive propulsion comes from an 80.9-kW front motor making a lackluster 143 horsepower. However, 200 pound-feet of torque means quick off-the-line acceleration and highway passing power. In terms of charging, Mazda says the 35.5-kWh battery pack charges from 5 to 80 percent in 36 minutes on a DC fast charger. Again, compared to other EVs, not earth-shattering.

Mazda's first effort into electrification may be a tough sell if not for its stylish, coupe-like design and high-quality interior space. For those who want an attractive EV for short commutes and in-town errands, the MX-30 may be an appealing choice.
