Changes to the 2022 BMW Models

Jack R. Nerad | Dec 02, 2021

For the 2022 model year, BMW makes some additions to its conventional lineup of luxury sedanscoupesconvertibles, and crossovers. At the same time, the automaker is setting the stage for a new BMW era by introducing the i4 and iX battery-electric models. They herald BMW's renewed plan to move forward on zero-emission vehicles as significant elements in its overall product plan.

While electric vehicles (EVs) are timely, BMW continues to play to its strengths on the conventional side of the business. For 2022 it introduces an all-new 2 Series coupe, a model the company sees as the legitimate successor of the fabled BMW 2002, the car that really established the brand in America.

The BMW X3 and X4 crossover models get some exterior alterations and revised interiors for the 2022 model year. Changes across other model lines are minimal.

BMW 2 Series Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

For the 2022 model year, BMW is bringing forth the second generation of its small 2 Series Coupe, the model line it refers to as the spiritual successors to the legendary BMW 2002 models. The BMW 230i and M240i xDrive sport high-horsepower engines, high-tech infotainment, and more interior room. The revised platform is longer, lower, and wider than the previous 2 Series. An interesting aspect of the new design revolves around the signature BMW twin-kidney grille. It has vertical air flaps that the driver can electrically open to provide more cooling air when required.

Inside, the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument and driver information display plus a 10.25-inch infotainment display. The 2 Series offers BMW iDrive 7 as its information system driver rather than iDrive 8 provided in the all-electric i4 and iX models.

The BMW 230i and M240i xDrive are the first of the new 2 series Coupes to go on sale, followed by the 230i xDrive and M240i. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has no changes for the 2022 model year, except for minor equipment alterations.

2022 BMW 3 Series Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

Perhaps the biggest news for the BMW 3 Series is the arrival of the 503 M3 Competition sedan with xDrive for 2022. The specialty performance model will have the rear-biased all-wheel-drive (AWD) system designed to add traction while retaining the typical BMW handling characteristics. According to BMW, the AWD and electronic differential are connected to electronic stability control to improve launch and counter understeer and oversteer.

The 3 Series lineup is otherwise essentially unchanged for the 2022 model year, except for a few equipment changes. For example, the 330i models will now have the Live Cockpit Professional digital display.

2022 BMW 4 Series Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The biggest story for the 2002 BMW 4 Series lineup is the addition of the M440i xDrive Coupe and M440i xDrive Convertible. The specialty performance models join the previously introduced 430i and 430i xDrive Coupes. A 382-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine powers the M440i xDrive Coupe, giving it the juice to scamper from zero-to-60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, according to BMW. It possesses commensurate performance equipment, including a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The 430i xDrive convertible also joins the 4 Series lineup for 2022.

For 2022, BMW introduces the second-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe. Available as 430i Gran Coupe and M440i xDrive Gran Coupe, the 4-door coupe-style vehicle will seat up to five.

All 2022 4 Series models get additional features, including Live Cockpit Professional, ambient lighting, and a better Bluetooth package.

The BMW 5 Series midsize sedan lineup is virtually unchanged for the 2022 model year.

2022 BMW 7 Series Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW 7 Series and the associated Alpina B7 luxury performance model are unchanged versus 2021.

2022 BMW 8 Series Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

Like the 7 Series cars with which they share a platform, the 2022 BMW 8 Series and Alpina B8 are nearly unchanged for the new model year. BMW 840i and 840i xDrive models now have the previously optional M Sport package. On the specialty car front, the M8 Coupe and Convertible return for 2022 after a hiatus in 2021; they are only available in 617-hp Competition trim.

2022 BMW i4 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The introduction of the 2022 BMW i4 marks the beginning of a new era in EVs from the German automaker. It is available in i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 models; BMW calls the i4 M50 its first "fully electric performance vehicle." Based on the projected 536 combined horsepower from the 2-motor AWD 4-door coupe, it is easy to see why. The i4 eDrive40 should be no slouch in the performance department, either, with 335 hp from its single electric motor and rear-wheel drive. It has an estimated range of 300 miles on a full charge, while the i4 M50 gives up range for horsepower. Its estimated range is 245 miles on a full charge.

Both i4 models use BMW's fifth-generation eDrive tech; they are stuffed with additional leading-edge features like lift-related shock absorbers, rear air suspension, and electromechanical steering. Both models use near-actuator wheel-slip limitation to control and direct the immediate torque available from the electric motor(s). A curved display that combines a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display dominates the interior of the i4.

2022 BMW iX Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW iX brings more than 500 hp, AWD, and a distinctive (controversial?) exterior design to the suddenly booming battery-electric luxury crossover segment. The BMW iX xDrive50 offers a 516-hp all-electric drivetrain powering all four wheels. It is built of aluminum and carbon-reinforced plastic to save weight. And though BMW expects it to go from zero-to-60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, it isn't the "performance" model. BMW says an iX M60 with more than 600 hp is under consideration.

The iX xDrive50's electric AWD system can split torque to provide rear-drive or 4-wheel-drive, depending upon conditions. The optional adaptive suspension uses an air suspension in the rear and electrically controlled shock absorbers that, according to the company, provide BMW-level handling plus a smooth ride. The integrated braking system uses an innovative combination of brake activation, brake booster, and brake controls in a single module.

Inside, the 2022 BMW iX features the BMW iDrive 8 infotainment system that facilitates over-the-air updates and incorporates augmented reality into its navigation functions.

2022 BMW X1 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The BMW X1 small luxury crossover SUV enters the 2022 model year with no changes, and it will depart the same way.

The BMW X2 small specialty crossover mimics the X1 with no changes for the 2022 model year.

2022 BMW X3 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The BMW X3 compact luxury crossover receives several updates for 2022, including a refreshed exterior. The model also gets a refurbished interior that includes a new 10.25-inch infotainment display screen powered by the BMW iDrive 7 operating system. BMW also treats the performance-oriented X3 M40i to a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system and the Adaptive M suspension.

2022 BMW X4 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW X4 specialty luxury crossover has changes that largely mirror those on the closely related X3. The exterior gets a light-duty makeover, and the renewed interior has the new 10.25-inch infotainment display screen with the iDrive 7 operating system. The X4 M40i gets a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Like the X3 M, the X4 M gains some additional torque.

2022 BMW X5 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

A limited-edition BMW X5 Black Vermilion model is the X5's most notable change for 2022. While "black" editions are extremely popular right now, this X5 xDrive40i focuses on the interplay between black and red. For example, the grille is high-gloss black with red vertical bars.

2022 BMW X6 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The BMW X6 adds via subtraction for the 2022 model year. The rear-drive X6 sDrive40i vanishes from the lineup while the X6 xDrive40i and the X6 M50i models soldier on.

2022 BMW X7 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The BMW X7 large crossover SUV and related Alpina XB7 large performance-luxury crossover are the beneficiaries of minor changes to equipment for the 2022 model year. Enhanced Bluetooth is added to the standards list, while wireless charging is removed.

2022 BMW Z4 Changes - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW Z4 2-seat roadster is the recipient of minor equipment alterations. Ambient lighting disappears from the standard equipment list while a new Bluetooth system appears.
