5 Fun Facts You Might Not Know About the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz

Jack R. Nerad | May 03, 2021

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is one of those rare vehicles that is a “segment buster.” Rather than being easily classified in an existing portion of the market, the new 2022 Santa Cruz blazes its own trail.

What is a Hyundai Santa Cruz? It’s a compelling mashup of crossover SUV, pickup truck, and, with its optional turbocharged engine, sports sedan. It has an open cargo bed, yet its interior accommodations are almost identical to the roomy and comfortable Hyundai Tucson on which it’s based. With the availability of Hyundai Traction (HTRAC) all-wheel-drive and off-road-oriented tires, it has the chops to deliver off-road adventure. And the same turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the racy Sonata N Line is available in the Santa Cruz.

Unafraid to go its own way, the Santa Cruz is also filled with hidden features that could surprise you and delight you. Here are five facts of importance to anyone considering the purchase of a 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Fun Fact 1: There is lockable storage within lockable storage. - Find the best Hyundai deals!

A pickup truck bed like the one attached to the all-new Hyundai Santa Cruz has many uses. It is especially convenient for oversize cargo that you can’t fit through a liftgate or the doors of an SUV. But the downside of an open cargo bed is its openness. Lack of security can be a serious issue.

The 2022 Santa Cruz addresses this problem in two ways. First, it has a roll-up lockable tonneau cover for the bed. That, combined with the lockable tailgate, means items stored inside are as safe as in the trunk of a car.

But there’s more. Under the bed floor is another lockable compartment that is similar to the trunk of a small sedan. So items stored there are doubly secure.

Fun Fact 2: The Santa Cruz Turbo can perform. - Find the best Hyundai deals!

When you first see the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, you are likely to think it is an interesting concept with a great deal of utility. What you might not imagine is that the Santa Cruz, at least with the optional powertrain, promises to be quite fun to drive.

With a 2.5-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine that will deliver at least 275 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, the Santa Cruz will have enough go-power to provide satisfying driving thrills. On top of that, there’s the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It promises to offer excellent driver control through paddle shifters on the steering wheel, enabling drivers to initiate lightning-fast shifts.

Fun Fact 3: Santa Cruz offers uncommon maneuverability. - Find the best Hyundai deals!

Pickup trucks are helpful, but they aren’t particularly maneuverable or handy in urban situations. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz literally turns that around.

With a shorter wheelbase and overall length than even the most compact midsize trucks, the Santa Cruz will feel right at home in crowded urban settings and on narrow mountain trails. It’s nearly 10 inches shorter than the 2021 Nissan Frontier and almost 17 inches shorter than the 2021 Toyota Tacoma.

No, it doesn’t have as long a bed as those trucks, but it will comfortably seat five people inside. And it has a very tight curb-to-curb turning radius of just 20 feet.

Fun Fact 4: Santa Cruz offers hidden design delights. - Find the best Hyundai deals!

The styling on some vehicles is an open book. What you see is what you get. But the design of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is filled with unexpected eye candy. For example, the daytime running lights on the Santa Cruz’s attractive front end are hidden behind a jewel-designed geometric grille, and they are only visible when illuminated.

At the rear, the taillights have a subtle, embossed motto that says: “Designed in California.” That’s a tribute to the fact Hyundai conceived the Santa Cruz in its Irvine, Calif. design studio. Other so-called “Easter eggs” are scattered throughout the Santa Cruz’s cabin.

Fun Fact 5: Safe Exit Assist protects rear-seat passengers. - Find the best Hyundai deals!

If you’ve ever parallel parked next to a curb, you might recall a time when you opened your car door only to discover that an approaching vehicle was coming and traveling a path uncomfortably close to where you were about to step. It’s a frightening feeling, and some lives are lost just that way. But the 2022 Santa Cruz has a system to help prevent that.

Safe Exit Assist will provide a warning when an occupant tries to open the door to exit the Santa Cruz if a vehicle is approaching from the rear on either side. Not only that, since children may ignore the warning, Safe Exit Assist can also help keep the rear doors closed through the activation of the child-safety locks in such situations.
