5 Fun Facts You Might Not Know About the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Jessica Shea Choksey | Apr 29, 2021

The Toyota Sienna has been an icon of the minivan segment for as long as we can remember. With three rows of seats and up to 8-passenger capacity, it is a people-moving extraordinaire thanks to its roominess, cargo space, and abundance of creature comforts.

For 2021, the Sienna undergoes a complete redesign with a bold, new appearance. It is available in five trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and newly-added Platinum. But the biggest news is Sienna’s all-new standard hybrid powertrain. This efficient gas-electric system produces 243 horsepower and sends energy to the wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Sienna comes in either front-wheel drive or with an enhanced all-wheel-drive system.

With bells and whistles galore, it isn’t easy to narrow down the Sienna’s many highlights. Here are five fun facts that stand out.

Fun Fact 1: The Sienna sips fuel like a subcompact. - Find the best Toyota deals!

As the auto industry moves toward electrification, the Sienna has become the eco-friendly flagship of the minivan segment, with a standard hybrid system as its sole powertrain.

The result is a segment-leading 36 mpg of combined fuel economy, which not only far surpasses all of the Sienna’s gas-powered van competitors but is astoundingly on par with much smaller subcompact offerings like the Kia Rio and Nissan Versa. That kind of fuel efficiency can save a family hundreds of dollars annually at the gas pump, if not more.

Additionally, an all-electric mode allows the Sienna to drive short distances at low speeds without using a drop of fuel. Prowling a parking lot in search of a space? Idling in place while you check text messages or email? The Sienna lets you do it without burning any gas.

If all that wasn’t enough, the Sienna makes road trips and long excursions a joy with its interstate cruising range of almost 600 miles on a single tank of gas. Try to beat that.

Fun Fact 2: Sienna’s second-row seats are fit for a king. - Find the best Toyota deals!

Minivans are known for offering plenty of passenger space and comfort, but the Sienna goes above and beyond for riders in the second row.

The second-row captain’s chairs offer an available long slide feature that allows up to 25 inches of fore and aft travel to create more legroom than ever. The extended seat tracks make it possible for even the tallest of passengers to stretch out fully. And if needed, the seats can slide all the way forward and collapse vertically to maximize cargo space.

The plush second-row captain’s chairs also recline back for a first-class airline-style experience. The true royal treatment is made complete with available ottoman leg rests.

Fun Fact 3: The Sienna’s Bridge Console brings comfort and convenience to the first row. - Find the best Toyota deals!

The Sienna’s center console design is something to behold. Toyota calls it a Bridge Console because it sits high and “bridges” the gap between the driver and the front passenger while seamlessly integrating the instrument panel into the armrest structure.

This ergonomic layout promotes a more comfortable driving experience by placing the shifter and other controls in closer reach of the driver. It also makes convenience features such as cup holders, available wireless charger, and storage compartments more accessible.

Ultimately, the Bridge Console is an innovative element that personalizes space for the front two seats. For parents, that could make long drives more relaxing and stress-free.

Fun Fact 4: The Sienna Woodland Special Edition is adventure-ready. - Find the best Toyota deals!

The Sienna is more than just an around-town family hauler. Starting with the 2022 model year, it is a more capable outdoor adventurer thanks to the new Sienna Woodland Special Edition

This uniquely rugged model combines the Sienna’s AWD, increased ground clearance, and 18-inch wheels to allow families to explore the wilderness with surefooted confidence. To make the outdoor experience even more enjoyable, the Woodland Edition offers a tow hitch for trailering recreational vehicles up to 3,500 pounds, a 1,500-watt power outlet to energize a campsite, and roof rails with crossbars to help carry extra gear.

The Sienna Woodland Special Edition offers an exclusive Cement exterior color and brings a premium JBL audio system to pipe in tunes as you go off the beaten path. And for each vehicle purchased, Toyota will donate $250 to the National Environmental Educational Foundation (NEEF).

Fun Fact 5: The Sienna’s doors open with a kick. - Find the best Toyota deals!

There is nothing more inconvenient than getting to your vehicle with a handful of groceries and not being able to reach your key fob. Fortunately, the Sienna’s available kick-type hands-free power sliding side doors open and close with just a swipe of the foot. That makes loading in almost anything, including kids, a cinch.

This function uses sensors located under the door tracks on both sides of the vehicle. Although many vehicles now offer kick-type hands-free power tailgates for a more effortless cargo loading experience, the Sienna takes convenience up a level by applying this technology to the side doors. This feature is standard on XLE trims and above.
