Top-Rated 2018 Luxury SUVs Over $50,000 in Quality

Christian Wardlaw | Jun 20, 2018

Every year, for more than three decades, J.D. Power has conducted the Initial Quality Study (IQS). This automotive industry benchmark study is designed to measure the things that have gone right and the things that have gone wrong during the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership, as reported by the people who bought them.

Power Circle Ratings are derived from this data, summarizing the finding of the study in a simple visual format. Consumers can use the ratings when researching vehicles in order to make the best decision when buying a new car, truck, SUV, or van.

Every model on this list earned a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for initial quality during the first 90 days of ownership.

2018 BMW X6

Take one BMW X5, add a fastback roofline that reduces passenger and cargo space, bump the name up one digit, and you’ve got the BMW X6. Three versions are available, each delivering different levels of performance via turbocharged 6-cylinder and turbocharged 8-cylinder engines. For 2018, BMW revised option package availability and added a new 21-inch wheel option for some models.

The 2018 BMW X6 receives an Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a quality award in the Midsize Premium SUV segment.

2018 Lexus GX

Based on the same platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the tall and rugged Lexus GX supplies greater luxury, sophistication, and V8 power compared to the ‘Runner. Trim levels include standard, Premium, and Luxury, and 4-wheel drive is standard equipment for all of them. Changes for 2018 are limited to rear seating updates.

The 2018 Lexus GX receives an Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a midsize, 5-passenger SUV. It comes in standard and what Mercedes refers to as “coupe” body styles, the latter a rakishly penned fastback version that provides less interior space. The standard GLE is offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, a plug-in electric drivetrain, and three different AMG-tuned performance models. The GLE Coupe comes only in AMG specification.

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE receives an Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2018 Porsche Cayenne

In its final year before a complete redesign, the Cayenne midsize performance SUV sees no changes. Engine choices include a V6, turbocharged V6 and V8 engines, and a plug-in hybrid variant. Though each is capable to drive on pavement, this Porsche also demonstrates impressive off-roading capabilities.

The 2018 Porsche Cayenne receives an Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5.

2018 Porsche Macan

A small performance SUV, the Porsche Macan is actually priced just under $50,000. But by the time you add an option or two, it exceeds that threshold. Plus, all versions except the base model with its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine are priced well above that. You’ll choose between standard, S, Sport Edition, GTS, and Turbo trim, prices climbing in lock step with performance capabilities.

The 2018 Porsche Macan receives an Initial Quality Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5.
