Once guilty of profligate consumption of fossil fuels and a symbol of callous corporate contribution to climate change, the Hummer SUV returns as a clean, green, go-anywhere machine. This time around, the new 2024 GMC Hummer SUV is electric, loaded with impressive technology, and priced from about $80,000.

Based on the same platform and components as the new GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the Hummer EV SUV offers two rows of seating for up to five people. It comes in 2, 2X, 3X, and Edition 1 trim levels; the latter already sold out. Upgrading from standard 2 trim to the Hummer EV SUV 2X adds off-roading technology, while the 3X equips the SUV with a more powerful 3-motor drive system.

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV release date is early 2023 for the Edition 1, followed by the 2X and 3X in spring 2023. The most affordable model, the Hummer EV SUV 2, becomes available in spring 2024.

Sitting on a wheelbase nine inches shorter than the Hummer EV Pickup and with a total length reduction of 20 inches less than the truck, the 2021 GMC Hummer EV SUV should be the more maneuverable of the two electric vehicles, both on and off of the pavement.

The styling is classic, militaristic Hummer, with a boldly blunt front end, nearly vertical windshield, flat roof, and compact greenhouse. Boxed fenders and trapezoidal wheel wells contain standard 22-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch all-terrain tires.

Around back, the full-size spare tire is mounted to a power swing-out gate at the rear, allowing for a 48-inch-wide opening to the cargo area. Vertical taillights frame the spare tire housing, which contains the vehicle’s reversing and trailering camera technology.

Seven paint colors are available, and GMC says it will offer nearly 200 Hummer EV SUV accessories.

Just as boxy as its exterior styling, the interior design is composed almost entirely of right angles. The roomy interior seats five people under a standard Infinity Roof with removable panels. Take them off, power the tailgate’s rear window down, and the new GMC Hummer EV SUV offers an authentic open-air driving experience.

GMC says the Hummer EV SUV offers up to 81.8 cu.-ft. of cargo space with rear seat folded flat. Plus, there are storage compartments under the cargo floor and in the side trim, and a front trunk (frunk) resides under the Hummer EV SUV’s hood.

Purely electric, the new Hummer EV SUV employs what GMC calls an interdependent body/battery structure with a double-stacked battery design.

By way of explanation, Al Oppenheiser, Hummer EV chief engineer, said in a statement: “The Hummer EV’s body protects the battery, while the battery supports the structure. That means the battery pack itself is a structural element, which enables a truly open-air experience and a rare combination of extreme off-road capability and smooth on-road performance in a body-frame integral platform.”

Two-motor and three-motor Ultium Drive systems are available. With the Hummer EV SUV 2 and 2X, the two electric motors produce approximately 625 horsepower and 7,400 lb.-ft. of torque. With the 3X and Edition 1, the Ultium Drive system generates an estimated 830 hp and 11,500 lb.-ft.

According to GMC, with 2 trim, you get a little more than 250 miles of driving range. This standard Ultium Drive system is also 400-volt DC fast-charge capable.

With 2X, 3X, and Edition 1 trim, the Hummer EV SUV supplies more than 300 miles of range and is 800-volt DC fast-charge capable up to 300 kilowatts. This added range and charging capability is an option for the standard Hummer EV SUV 2. All Hummer EV SUVs offer Regen on Demand and one-pedal driving to help extend battery life.

A Watts to Freedom function is standard for the 3X and Edition 1, and it will accelerate this electric SUV to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, according to GMC. When the driver engages this temporary power boost, the instrumentation shows the technology is “armed and ready.”

A MyMode driving mode allows owners to customize the Hummer EV SUV’s acceleration, steering, suspension, and vehicle sound characteristics. A Terrain Mode supplies more precise braking control when off-roading and rock crawling.

Speaking of off-roading, thanks to its shorter wheelbase and overall length, the Hummer EV SUV is more capable off-pavement than its pickup truck sibling. The breakover angle (34.4 degrees) and departure angle (49 degrees) are better than the Hummer EV Pickup, but the EV SUV’s 49.6-degree approach angle is slightly less than Pickup’s.

Depending on trim and equipment, GMC says the Hummer EV SUV offers 16 inches of maximum ground clearance, 32 inches of maximum water fording capability, and 13 inches of maximum suspension travel.

Upgrading to 2X, 3X, or Edition 1 trim adds several useful off-roading technologies. The 4-Wheel Steer system provides the electric Hummer SUV with a 35.4-foot turning radius, while Crab Walk allows the vehicle to drive diagonally when necessary. An adaptive damping air suspension is also standard for this trim level, complete with an Extract Mode that can lift the vehicle to help it exit challenging situations.

Furthermore, the 3X and Edition 1 get a torque vectoring system that can deliver power to a single wheel if it is the only one touching the ground, ensuring traction in the most difficult of conditions.

An Extreme Off-Road Package is optional for the 2X, 3X, and Edition 1. It equips the Hummer EV SUV with unique 18-inch wheels, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, underbody armor and rock sliders, a front electronic locking differential, virtual rear electronic lockers, and heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts. An UltraVision camera system with front and rear underbody cameras and lens washers is also a part of this package.

Note that the Extreme Off-Road Package does reduce range to less than 300 miles of driving.

Safety Systems - Find the best GMC deals!

When the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV goes on sale, expect it to include a complete collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), including enhanced Super Cruise.

Enhanced Super Cruise is new to General Motors products starting with selected 2021 model-year vehicles, and it includes a new automatic lane changing feature. When the driver signals a lane change, this version of Super Cruise will autonomously steer the vehicle into the adjacent lane as long as it is clear of traffic and safe to do so.

The original version of Super Cruise, such as the one installed in the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, does not offer this lane-changing function.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best GMC deals!

It might look simple and industrial inside, but the GMC Hummer EV SUV is a technologically sophisticated vehicle.

Drivers face rectangular 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system displays. GMC claims it worked with a Hollywood creative agency with Marvel Universe experience to create what it claims is a cinematic-style in-cabin experience for the driver and passengers.

In addition to the expected infotainment technologies, the GMC Hummer EV supplies Off-Road Widgets that provide immediate access to information about the vehicle’s features and capabilities. The vehicle also offers digital key technology that transforms the owner’s smartphone into the vehicle’s key.

Cameras are everywhere. The high-definition Surround Vision technology offers up to 14 different camera views, while the available UltraVision system adds three more cameras, including the previously mentioned underbody ones.

A redesigned MyGMC smartphone app equips the GMC Hummer EV SUV with Trail Mapping. Owners can use it to plan off-roading excursions, navigate while on the trail, and incorporate charging station locations into route planning while determining their distance from off-roading destinations.

A Power Station generator exports electric power from the Hummer EV SUV to any equipment that requires it, at a rate of up to 120 volts/3 kW. The system can also charge another electric vehicle at 240 volts/6 kW and provide AC charging at 19.2 kW.

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Competitors - Find the best GMC deals!

The most obvious competitors to the new GMC Hummer EV SUV are the Bollinger B1, Rivian R1S, and an upcoming vehicle from Lucid that currently goes by the name Project Gravity. The Jeep Wrangler Magneto concept shown at this year’s Easter Safari festivities in Moab could also portend a future Hummer competitor.

For now, though, production plans and production reality are two different things. The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will actually go on sale. The others might not.
