Nissan was the first to offer a mass-market, all-electric vehicle to Americans with the introduction of the original Leaf in 2010. Now, the automaker travels further into the future with the introduction of the Nissan Ariya, a modern electric crossover SUV.

Introduced as a 2021 model in Japan, the Ariya will likely arrive in the U.S. market as a 2022 model. With a reported electric driving range of about 300 miles and an estimated starting price of around $40,000, the Ariya is one of 12 new Nissan models arriving in the next 18 months as a part of the automaker’s aggressive product plan.

Nissan expects the new Ariya to compete with the Kia Niro and Kona Electric in price but with more spacious accommodations, longer range, and greater performance.

A compact crossover that’s similar in size to the Nissan Rogue, the new Ariya incorporates familiar yet futuristic interpretations of existing Nissan design cues to create a look all its own.

The company’s V-Motion front styling takes on a technical appearance for the grille-less Ariya, with distinctive LED lighting elements adding extra character. The SUV’s flanks feature deeply fluid sculpturing, while the rear tapers to a sharply creased wedge where a single-piece blade LED taillight lives.

The Ariya will be available in six two-tone colors, each with a black roof, as well as three single-tone colors. Depending on the trim level, you can choose 19- or 20-inch wheels in aerodynamic designs.

Distinguished by dual 12.3-inch digital display screens, one for the instrumentation and one for infotainment, the Ariya’s interior is clean, minimalistic, and upscale. The climate controls reside in a row below the infotainment screen, haptic switches rather than traditional buttons and knob in order to maintain a forward-looking flat panel look.

Because there is no transmission tunnel, storage is located under the dashboard. Both a storage box and a fold-out tray that slides fore and aft add practicality, while the Ariya’s center console is height adjustable and features a mouse-like transmission shifter pod.

The front seats employ Nissan’s comfortable Zero Gravity design with a slim profile, and the flat floor improves rear passenger comfort. Behind the rear seats, Nissan says you should find about 16.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the FWD version, and 14.6 cubic feet with the AWD version.

Power and Performance - Find the best Nissan deals!

A standard 65-kWh battery juices the Ariya’s electric motors, and a long-range 90-kWh battery is optional. The battery pack is located and centered under the vehicle for ideally balanced weight distribution and a low center of gravity. Both the FWD and AWD versions of the Ariya may be equipped with the standard-range or long-range battery.

Nissan isn’t talking about power ratings or recharging times, but in previous concept vehicle discussions about the Ariya the company has mentioned acceleration to 60 mph in less than five seconds. Given the 443 lb.-ft. of instant torque delivered by the optional e-4ORCE AWD system, that’s believable.

Nissan’s new e-4ORCE AWD system features torque splitting capabilities, will pull power from a dual front-rear electric motor arrangement, and feature independent brake control at each wheel for maximum adhesion to the road. It will take advantage of a suspension and platform that Nissan says are designed specifically for electric vehicles and to give drivers a fun, enjoyable driving experience.

We also know that the Ariya’s e-Pedal technology, derived from the Leaf, will allow you to use a one-pedal driving technique, in turn maximizing efficiency.

Safety - Find the best Nissan deals!

Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard for the Ariya, and the company’s new electric SUV will feature the latest version of the company’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving assistant technology.

By using information from the navigation system, 3D map data centers, and onboard radar units, the next-generation ProPilot Assist 2.0 system provides hands-off assistance with stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic, centering the SUV in its lane of travel, changing lanes and passing slower vehicles, and exiting the highway.

Like similar systems such as Cadillac Super Cruise, Ford Active Drive Assist, and Tesla Autopilot, Nissan ProPilot Assist 2.0 will require drivers to pay attention and be prepared to take control at a moment’s notice.

Technology - Find the best Nissan deals!

Operating the Ariya’s infotainment system should be a breeze, according to Nissan, thanks to voice recognition technology with advanced natural language understanding.

You can also use the familiar functions of Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and the 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen responds to tap, swipe and pinch motions just like a smartphone. Over-the-air firmware updates will keep the infotainment system and the car as current as possible.

To help reduce driver distraction, a head-up display projects pertinent information on the Ariya’s windshield.
