In addition to its benchmark aerodynamics, new electric vehicle platform, and claimed 480-mile range on a full charge of its battery pack, the 2022 EQS is a technological showcase. From its immense Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen infotainment and instrumentation display to its soundscapes and seats that offer "hot stone" massages, the EQS features a wealth of comfort and convenience technologies.

Of course, sustainable personal transport and zero-emissions driving are at this EV's heart, and the EQS points the way to Mercedes-Benz's future. It will arrive in U.S. showrooms in the fall of 2021. Expect prices similar to that of the Tesla Model S, which can top $165,000.

Making the new EQS distinctive and substantial while simultaneously achieving record-breaking aerodynamics to enhance the car's overall efficiency was a challenge for Mercedes-Benz designers.

Employing the company's current "Sensual Purity" design themes, they decided on a "one-bow" proportion for the roofline. It puts the base of the windshield farther forward than in most current sedans, giving the EQS a "cab-forward" aspect that emphasizes the ample cabin space.

The roofline extends almost to the rear of the car, magnifying the appearance of spaciousness. Both the front and rear overhangs (ahead and behind the wheels, respectively) are short, and the smoothly curved hindquarters of the car also emphasize its wind-cheating design. Mercedes claims the EQS posts a record low 0.20 coefficient of drag.

Since the EQS does not have an internal combustion engine, it doesn't need a traditional radiator grille. Instead, a black panel featuring the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star decorates the front of the car, along with an LED light band that connects the standard "Digital Light" headlamps.

Interior Features - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

Interior designers went to great lengths to integrate the available MBUX Hyperscreen into the EQS's cabin. So-equipped, it is the dominant feature of the car's interior, stretching across the entirety of the dashboard.

Contoured to fit the space, the screen isn't flat or rectangular, so it offers a wraparound look and feel with minimal framing. The Hyperscreen's central and front passenger displays provide haptic feedback, delivering pulses to users' fingertips as they manipulate the controls. An equally well-integrated band of vents festooned with rose gold accents top the Hyperscreen display.

Leather surfaces with intricate seams and perforations appear throughout the cabin. Some of the trim is Neotex, a synthetic material that resembles neoprene. Genuine wood fashions other trim pieces.

The Mercedes EQS maintains a quiet, serene interior with an acoustic comfort package that insulates the cabin, while optional laminated glass provides both sound and heat protection. Mercedes also designs the standard panoramic sunroof for maximum quiet.

Of course, some sounds are welcome. The EQS comes from the factory with two soundscapes: "silver waves" and "vivid flux." To protect its upscale occupants from unpleasant odors, the EQS has a large, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.

Under the Hood - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The 2022 EQS is the first Mercedes model based on an all-new, dedicated electric vehicle platform that will undoubtedly support additional Mercedes-Benz EVs in the future. The platform is scalable in wheelbase and track, and it can utilize one or more electric motors and various battery pack sizes depending upon the application.

All EQS models will have an electric motor at the rear axle. Versions with 4Matic all-wheel drive will also have an electric motor at the front axle. In 4Matic models, a torque-shift function will facilitate continuously variable distribution of drive torque between the rear and front electric motors.

In its EQS 580 4Matic launch form, the car will offer up to 516 horsepower (385 kW) of system power from two electric motors. An EQS 450+ offering 329 hp (245 kW) from a single rear motor is also coming to the U.S. market. Mercedes promises a 750-horsepower high-performance model is in the works.

The EQS's impressive 480-mile range on a fully charged battery is attributable to three factors. The EQS batteries will have unusually high cell energy density. And the Mercedes-Benz-designed energy management system does a superior job of using that battery power. The EQS's drag coefficient of only 0.20 also contributes to the car's overall efficiency.

Using a 200-kW DC fast charger, EQS drivers can regain up to 186 miles (300 kilometers) of range in just 15 minutes.

Safety Systems - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The Mercedes-Benz EQS will take safety and driver-assist features to the next level with an unheard array of systems.

Naturally, the car features common advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), especially for such a technologically advanced automobile. Beyond these, Mercedes says the EQS will offer SAE Level 3 autonomous driving due to its vast array of lidar, radar, and camera sensors and the associated software to integrate all that information.

Once approved by regulators, an over-the-air software update will activate the Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot system. Drive Pilot will allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel in dense traffic situations and turn their attention to matters other than driving. Currently, all approved hands-free ADAS requires drivers to pay close attention and be ready to take control.

Additionally, the EQS offers an active lane-change assistance system. It can autonomously execute a lane change to an adjacent left or right lane if the system determines no vehicles are in the danger zone. Drivers must signal the lane change for the system to work.

Automatic emergency stop assistance is also aboard the new EQS. This technology is already available in other Mercedes-Benz models. Still, it is worth mentioning because it can be instrumental in a medical emergency, bringing the EQS to a stop in its lane if it recognizes that the driver is no longer responsive.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The Mercedes-Benz EQS takes in-car infotainment and control to new heights. With the MBUX Hyperscreen, which is standard on the EQS 580, three displays merge to create an impressive total screen width of over 56 inches.

Beneath that glass surface, a 12.3-inch driver-side screen contains instrumentation and driver information, a 17-inch center display supplies access to infotainment functions, and a 12.3-inch front-passenger screen offers individualized entertainment. The powerful MBUX Hyperscreen has eight CPUs (central processing units), 24 gigabytes of RAM, and a 46.4 gigabit-per-second memory bandwidth.

Ideally, the EQS will use all that computing power to make your life easier. For example, the navigation system automatically calculates routes to maximize battery range. It considers the terrain, weather conditions, and the locations of charging stations to ensure you arrive at your destination in a minimum of time and with a minimum of hassle.

You might fear that with all this information on the Hyperscreen, the system itself will be challenging to navigate. But it actually uses some of its computing capabilities to figure things out for you. With learning-capable software, the control and display concept adapts to its user and makes personalized suggestions for infotainment, comfort, and vehicle functions.

Furthermore, the MBUX operating system uses a "zero-layer" concept, so the user doesn't need to scroll through sub-menus or give voice commands to access what they're seeking. Mercedes-Benz says the critical applications are always available on the top level in the field of vision, depending on the situation and context.

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS Competitors - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

When the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS goes on sale at the end of 2021, it will compete against the Audi E-tron GT, Lucid Air, Porsche Taycan, and Tesla Model S.

Like the Mercedes, the Audi E-tron GT is new for 2022, and it shares plenty with the Porsche Taycan underneath its skin. Both the Audi and Porsche are smaller inside than the new EQS, and while the E-tron GT and Taycan are powerful, neither can match the EQS's claimed 480 miles of range.

Perhaps the more appropriate EQS competitors are the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S. Lucid is a new startup, and the Air is a roomy, high-performance luxury sedan that offers up to a claimed 517 miles of driving range combined with acceleration to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

For 2021, Tesla has rejuvenated the aging Model S with two new variants — Plaid and Plaid+ — that supply a claimed 1,020 horsepower. Tesla says the Plaid+ will offer a driving range as high as 520 miles, while the Plaid variant will offer 390 miles maximum range. The less-expensive Model S Long Range delivers 412 miles of range.
