You’re looking at one of the most important cars in the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The compact 5-passenger sedan arrives in the U.S. market in early 2022.

For the moment, Mercedes offers details about the C 300 and C 300 4Matic, which serve as the foundation of what will broaden into a more diverse lineup. It comes in standard and AMG Line specification and features a new electrified powertrain promising improved performance and efficiency. The C-Class is rear-wheel drive unless it has 4Matic, which is an all-wheel-drive system.

Expressing the current Mercedes “Sensual Purity” design language, the new 2022 C-Class sedan is longer, wider, and lower to the ground. It boasts a slippery 0.24 coefficient of drag.

Designers have moved the car’s windshield and passenger compartment further back on a new platform, emphasizing the C-Class’s short front overhang, long wheelbase, and generous rear overhang for a “cab-backward” design. Mercedes says the proportions make the new C-Class appear “to be in motion at a standstill.”

Grille and bumper designs differ depending on specification, with AMG Line variants adding a diamond-studded grille design and a sportier front and rear appearance. The new C-Class has two-piece taillights, comes in five new paint colors, and offers a choice between 18-inch and 19-inch aluminum wheels mounted flush to the wheel arches.

Open the driver’s door, and the 2022 Mercedes C-Class reveals a new two-section dashboard design punctuated by air vents inspired by aircraft engines. Wood trim and aluminum inlays create the desired upscale look, and an available leatherette wrap for the dashboard furthers the impression of luxury. A 64-color ambient light system is standard, with an enhanced version available as an upgrade.

A standard 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel offers Sporty, Classic, and Understated themes as well as Navigation, Assistance, and Service data modes. To the right, on a central control panel canted toward the driver for a sporty, cockpit-style feel, an 11.9-inch portrait-mounted infotainment screen houses the latest Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) technology.

Because the new C-Class grows in size, it offers more interior room than before. Front headroom is improved, but Mercedes reserves the significant gains for rear-seat passengers, where the car supplies much-needed extra space for heads, legs, and elbows. Trunk room remains the same as the outgoing model.

Under the Hood - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

Mercedes plans to offer nothing but electrified and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines in the new 2022 C-Class. They’ll leverage the same Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology the automaker first used in its E-Class lineup

The ISG integrates with the 9-speed automatic transmission, and it performs the following functions:

  • Reduces accessory load on the engine
  • Assists propulsion at low speeds
  • Boosts maximum power when accelerating hard
  • Captures energy to recharge the 48V electrical system
  • Allows the engine to shut off for extended periods when coasting down hills or approaching a stop at an intersection

Ultimately, it both saves fuel and improves performance. In the redesigned 2022 C 300 sedans, Mercedes pairs the transmission and ISG with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The automaker says it features a new segment turbocharger design for quicker responsiveness.

Output measures 255 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,000 rpm and 3,200 rpm. The ISG can add an extra 20 hp and a near-instantaneous 184 lb.-ft. of torque for short periods, which helps launch the C 300 when speedy acceleration is desirable. Mercedes claims the sedan accelerates to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The engine powers the C 300’s rear wheels. A 4Matic AWD system is available, and for 2022 the 4Matic system is lighter and boasts reduced friction losses.

Mercedes also equips the new C-Class with standard continuously adjustable suspension damping. Choose the C 300 AMG Line for a sport-tuned version of the suspension.

Safety Systems - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

Because Mercedes sells the C-Class all around the world, the automaker engineers the car to meet the widely varying crash safety requirements of global markets. Beyond its structural integrity and ability to absorb and deflect crash energy in a collision, the new C-Class offers numerous standard and available advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS).

Among the highlights are a newly expanded and improved Driver Assistance Package. This optional upgrade installs several ADAS in the C-Class, including several new functions:

  • The automatic emergency braking system responds to stationary vehicles in the road ahead at speeds up to 62 mph (vs. 37 mph previously)
  • Active Steering Assist keeps the C-Class in its lane at speeds up to 130 mph
  • Lane recognition capability is better thanks to new surround-view camera technology that improves lane-centering and lane-keeping performance on highways and winding roads
  • Upgraded parking sensors provide faster intelligent parking system performance and enhanced emergency braking functions

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe Impulse Side is available in conjunction with the Driver Assistance Package. It senses when another vehicle is about to strike the C-Class on the side and prepares the cabin and occupants for impact. It uses seat bolster inflation chambers to push occupants closer to the middle of the vehicle.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

Mercedes equips the 2022 C-Class sedan with next-generation MBUX technology. Over-the-air update capability keeps MBUX current over time.

In the C-Class, MBUX offers an improved “Hey, Mercedes” digital voice assistant, a fingerprint scanner to log into your personal profile and protect your data, and Mercedes Me online payment processing from the car. A new Online Music service streams millions of songs to the 2022 C-Class. Using this technology, owners can play favorite songs, create personal or access curated playlists, discover new artists, and more.

Upgrades include a color 9-inch head-up display projecting data so that it appears to float 15 feet away above the car’s hood. An Augmented Video for Navigation system is also available, overlaying navigation instructions atop a forward-looking video view of the road ahead. It is quite helpful in densely packed urban areas and after dark.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Competitors - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

There is no shortage of compact luxury sedans, but the C-Class is one of the most aspirational. Other choices include the Acura TLX, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CT5, Genesis G70, Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS, and Volvo S60.

With this 2022 model year redesign, the C-Class advances in terms of passenger comfort, technology, performance, efficiency, and overall sophistication to ensure that it remains competitive beyond the three-pointed star that graces its grille.
