With the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, General Motors plants a huge flag atop Supertruck Mountain. With up to 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque, accommodating up to 37-inch all-terrain tires, and able to accelerate to 60 mph in three seconds, the GMC Hummer EV is now the performance pickup to beat.

“We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck – ever,” said Al Oppenheiser, GMC Hummer EV chief engineer, in a statement to the media. “It’s an absolute off-road beast with a unique e4WD drive system that provides maneuverability unlike anything GM has ever offered before.”

GMC is debuting the 2022 Hummer EV in Edition 1 specification, priced from $112,595. In years to come, according to Automotive News, more affordable versions of the truck will arrive:

  • Hummer EV 2 arrives in spring of 2024, with a target price of $79,995
  • Hummer EV 2X debuts in spring of 2023, with a window sticker of $89,995
  • Hummer EV 3X on sale in fall of 2022, dipping below the six-figure mark with a starting price of $99,995

An SUV version of the Hummer EV is also rumored, which makes perfect sense.

Exterior Features

Remember the Hummer SUT? It resembled three boxes fused together, sitting on oversized wheels and tires. The new 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a little like that, but far more futuristic and appealing.

Equipped with full-width LED lighting including an illuminated 6-bar grille, deftly embedded roof clearance lights at the top of the windshield, and micro-optic battery charging animation lighting, the Hummer EV is immediately recognizable as its namesake.

Boxed fenders, a bulging hood, massive front tow hooks, vertical windows, square side mirrors, and trapezoidal wheel arches clearly recall the original Hummer. Around the back, the connection is cloudier. You can see hints of the Chevy Avalanche pickup truck, the Land Rover Defender, and the GMC Sierra, but that’s all good.

Production starts in the fall of 2021 at the new Factory Zero production facility in Detroit. Every 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be painted white. And every one of them will come in fully-loaded Edition 1 specification, including 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, a MultiPro tailgate with six different functions, and a power tonneau cover.

Interior Features

Inside, the Hummer EV promises “innovation and luxury,” according to GMC.

Innovation takes the form of large, digital instrumentation and infotainment displays and the latest in safety systems. Luxury comes by way of perforated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Bose premium sound system with a topographical relief map motif on the door speakers.

Similar to how every 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 is painted white, each of them comes with a Lunar Horizon interior. Jet Black lower seats, flooring, and dashboard panels contrast sharply with the light gray upper seats, door panels, and dashboard top. Brushed gold accents fancy things up.

A transparent Infinity Roof bathes the cabin in natural light, and four Sky Panels over the front and rear seats are removable and stow in the truck front trunk (frunk). The rear window drops down between the cab and the cargo bed to maximize the open-air driving sensation.

Under the Hood

GMC builds the Hummer EV on its new Ultium Drive vehicle architecture and battery packs. The Edition 1 specification gets the maximum amount of power from three electric motors packaged into two drive units that create an electronic four-wheel-drive (e4WD) system.

GMC estimates 1,000 horsepower and a downright astounding 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque. Engage the driver-selected Watts to Freedom mode, and this electric truck accelerates to 60 mph in a claimed three seconds flat. Drive with less enthusiasm, and you might meet GMC’s estimate of 350 miles of driving range.

When you need to charge the Hummer EV away from home, Ultium Drive is compatible with 800-watt/350 kW DC Fast Chargers. It includes what GM says is an industry-first technology that mechanically switches the batteries from parallel to series mode during charging. This capability allows the Hummer EV to soak up 100 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes.

In addition to 35-inch all-terrain tires, the Hummer EV has four-wheel steering that enhances handling and reduces the truck’s turning radius for better maneuverability. A Crabwalk function turns all four wheels in the same direction, allowing the truck to travel diagonally at low speeds. GMC says the Hummer EV can accommodate 37-inch all-terrain tires.

An adaptive air suspension includes, among others, a Terrain mode. After the Edition 1 starts landing in customer driveways, an Extract mode will be available as an over-the-air software update. Extract mode will lift the Hummer EV six extra inches for added clearance when driving over boulders and fording water. GMC says Hummer EV can scale an 18-inch vertical obstacle and ford water more than two feet deep.

Electronic locking front and rear axles maximize traction at both ends of the Hummer EV. To protect the truck when off-roading, full underbody armor in the form of steel plates protects the battery pack.

GMC will offer a full slate of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) for the new Hummer EV. In addition to the expected functions, a button on the lower left side of the dashboard appears to indicate a rollover protection system of some kind. Apparently, a driver can turn it off.

Next-generation Super Cruise will be standard for the Hummer EV Edition 1, a hands-free Level 2 ADAS equipped with a new automated lane-changing function and smoother, more accurate operation. This version of Super Cruise is rolling out to 2021 model-year Cadillacs and is operable on more than 200,000 miles of limited-access highways in North America.

GMC equips the Hummer EV with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Both are flat and square, and they appear to use similar organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology as the 2021 Cadillac Escalade.

Few details are available for the infotainment system, aside from the previously mentioned Bose premium audio components. It’s a good bet the Hummer EV will include GMC Connected Services with OnStar, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

GMC did confirm that the truck will offer Off-road Widgets. These will be visible in the driver information display and on the infotainment screen, and will pertain to matters such as torque output, locking differential engagement, tire pressure, pitch and roll angles, a drift gauge, torque vectoring, and more.

Additionally, the Hummer EV has up to 18 different cameras all around the truck, and UltraVision adds front and rear underbody cameras with washers to provide a “virtual spotter” ground-level view of what’s in front of and behind the truck.
