Ford has been talking about an electric F Series truck for years. Now, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is officially official, one of several electric pickups that will hit American roads in the next two years. Primary rivals will include the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck.

When the 2022 F-150 Lightning goes on sale in the spring of 2022, it will come with a crew cab, a short cargo bed, and a choice between XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trim levels.

Ford is adamant about making its new electric F Series truck financially accessible, so the F-150 Lightning XLT is priced from $52,974 before applying the federal income tax credit (up to $7,500) and any state or local rebates and incentives. A stripped-down version of the F-150 Lightning will be available to commercial buyers for $39,974.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Optional Full Width LED Taillight Bar

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning looks similar to the standard F-150 but with aerodynamic design modifications that help to maximize the truck’s driving range. The short cargo box holds 52.8 cubic feet of volume, according to Ford.

Details include a smooth front end with three different grille treatments, a revised hood to reduce drag, and redesigned running boards. Ford installs standard LED headlights and taillights, and all trim levels have an LED light bar running across the hood. A similar treatment for the tailgate is an option.

The XLT rolls on standard 18-inch aluminum wheels. A set of 20-inch wheels is optional for the XLT and standard with Lariat trim, while the F-150 Lightning Platinum sits on 22-inch wheels.

Ford has confirmed that it will offer power deploying running boards and a 360-degree Zone Lighting system for the new F-150 Lightning.

Interior Features - Find the best Ford deals!

Ford says the Lightning offers the same cab and seating space as a standard F-150 Super Crew

Cloth seats are standard with XLT trim, while the Lariat has leather upholstery. Premium leather distinguishes the Platinum trim level, and only the Platinum supplies massaging multi-contour front seats. Ford’s Max Recline Seats are an exclusive option with Platinum trim, folding nearly flat when napping is necessary.

Ford also offers its Interior Work Surface for the F-150 Lightning. This flat surface transforms the center console into a small table suitable for using a laptop, signing paperwork, eating lunch, and other uses.

Under the Hood - Find the best Ford deals!

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Dual Motor Electric Drive Transparency

What’s under the F-150 Lightning’s hood? Literally, a 14.1 cubic-foot front trunk (frunk). The truck’s hood and grille power up to reveal this water-resistant space, which offers four electrical outlets, two USB chargers, and 400 pounds of payload capacity.

As for the electric propulsion system, it nestles into an all-new steel frame wrapped in the truck’s aluminum bodywork. Standard-range and extended-range lithium-ion battery packs power dual in-board electric motors, creating an electric 4-wheel-drive system.

The batteries are liquid-cooled, and Ford says it arranges the powertrain for maximum cooling under the harshest heat and towing conditions. The automaker also claims it durability-tested the F-150 Lightning to negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure it works in frigid temperatures.

Ford F-150 Lightning Standard Range Specifications

Ford offers the following estimated specifications for the new F-150 Lightning with the standard-range battery:

  • Horsepower: 426 horsepower
  • Torque: 775 pound-feet
  • Driving Range: 230 miles
  • Home/Office Charging Time: 10 hours to 14 hours (from 15% to 100% charge)
  • 150 kW DC Fast Charging Time: 44 minutes (from 15% to 80% charge)
  • Maximum Payload: 2,000 pounds (with 18-inch wheels)
  • Maximum Towing: 7,700 pounds

The standard-range Lightning includes an 11.3 kilowatt (kW) onboard charger with 10.5 kW output capability. Ford includes a complimentary 32-amp Ford Mobile Charger with the standard-range model, and this charger requires a 14-hour wait to recharge the battery. For faster recharging at home or the office, a 48-amp Ford Connected Charge Station is available, getting the job done in about 10 hours.

Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range Specifications

Choose the F-150 Lightning with the extended-range battery, and Ford makes the following estimates:

  • Horsepower: 563 horsepower
  • Torque: 775 pound-feet
  • Driving Range: 300 miles
  • Home/Office Charging Time: 8 hours (from 15% to 100% charge)
  • 150 kW DC Fast Charging Time: 41 minutes (from 15% to 80% charge)
  • Maximum Payload: 1,800 pounds (with 18-inch wheels)
  • Maximum Towing: 10,000 pounds (XLT and Lariat with Max Trailer Tow Package)

This version of the truck accelerates to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, according to Ford. It also has a 19.2 kW onboard charger with 17.6 kW output capability.

Extended-range trucks include a standard 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro. This charging station solution is optional for the standard-range model but doesn’t recharge the truck faster than the 48-amp Ford Connected Charge Station. Ford is partnering with Sunrun to install the 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro system at your home or office, giving Lightning owners the option to install solar panels at the same time.

F-150 Lightning Charging Times and Solutions

On the road, the F-150 Lightning’s cloud-connected Intelligent Range function calculates the remaining driving range while considering the weather, traffic, payload weight, towing weight, and other factors.

If you need to charge the truck at a public charging station, the FordPass smartphone app or the truck’s navigation system can help you find 63,000 plugs nationwide. Ford says this is the largest public charging network in North America, and it is only growing.

Pull up to a 150 kW DC fast charger, and the F-150 Lightning with the standard-range battery can grab 41 miles of added range in 10 minutes (54 miles for the extended-range battery).

F-150 Lightning Towing Technology

Ford F-150 Lightning buyers who plan to tow will want the Tow Technology Package (optional with XLT and Lariat, and standard with Platinum). It adds all of the towing bells and whistles.

With the Lightning, Ford debuts its new Pro Trailer Hitch Assist technology, a semi-autonomous system that steers, brakes, and adjusts the throttle while you’re hitching the truck to a trailer.

Additionally, Ford’s recently announced Onboard Scales technology uses sensors to estimate the weight of any payload. In the Lightning it integrates with the truck’s Intelligent Range system to ensure the driver gets an accurate remaining range estimate.

Ford F-150 Lightning Off-Roading Capability

Though equipped with an independent rear suspension design, the F-150 Lightning will supply “excellent” off-roading capability, according to Ford. The truck offers the following specifications:

  • Angle of approach: 25.4 degrees
  • Angle of departure: 24.2 degrees
  • Breakover angle: 17.8 degrees
  • Ground clearance: 8.9 inches

Ford installs underbody protection with metal skid plates to protect the battery and electric motors and houses the battery in a waterproof casing surrounded by crash-absorption material.

Can You Power a House with the F-150 Lightning?

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Intelligent Backup Power After Storm

Naturally, you can use the F-150 Lightning to export power for a variety of needs. With Pro Power Onboard, the XLT exports 2.4 kW while the Lariat and Platinum can supply 9.6 kW of power (2.4 kW from the frunk and 7.2 kW from the cab and cargo bed).

A new Ford Intelligent Backup Power system is available with the F-150 Lightning. In the event of a home power outage, it automatically exports up to 9.6 kW of power and can keep a typical home running for three days when starting with a full extended-range battery.

How does this work? As long as you’ve got the truck plugged into the 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro when the power goes out, the truck will automatically switch from charging mode to export mode to supply power to the house. When the power comes back on, the truck will automatically revert to charging mode.

Another feature that is coming soon is Ford Intelligent Power. This system works similarly but is available daily without a power outage. It will allow F-150 Lightning owners to use the truck’s battery to power a house during high-cost, peak-energy hours and then revert to recharging the battery overnight when electricity rates are lower. This feature will save owners money on electricity and reduce the load on the energy grid during peak daytime hours.

Safety Systems - Find the best Ford deals!

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Silver Front Quarter

Ford plans to offer every advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) in its arsenal for the new F-150 Lightning.

Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 is standard equipment, and buyers can upgrade to Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0. This option adds:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
  • Lane-centering assistance
  • Emergency steering assistance
  • Intersection turning assistance
  • Speed sign recognition

Building on this list of ADAS, the separate Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 package equips the Lightning with Ford’s new hands-free BlueCruise technology and autonomous Active Park Assist 2.0 technology.

BlueCruise operates on approximately 100,000 miles of approved roads within Hands-Free Blue Zones. It allows the driver to let go of the steering wheel, but drivers must pay attention and remain ready to retake control at any time. It is not a Level 3 ADAS.

Active Park Assist 2.0 can steer, brake, accelerate, and change gears while autonomously parking the F-150 Lightning. The driver remains in the driver’s seat, ready to take control if necessary.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Ford deals!

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Sync 4 15.5-inch Touchscreen

In addition to a standard 12-inch digital instrumentation panel with enhanced displays specific to this truck’s electric drive system, Ford offers two versions of its Sync 4 infotainment technology to F-150 Lightning buyers.

The XLT trim has a 12-inch touchscreen display in landscape orientation, while the Lariat and Platinum use a 15.5-inch touchscreen display mounted portrait style. Both versions equip the truck with:

  • Natural voice control
  • Cloud-connected navigation
  • Directions to public charging stations
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Integrated Amazon Alexa
  • FordPass Connect connected services, including a Wi-Fi hotspot

Through the FordPass smartphone app, owners can use Power My Trip to program routes to destinations that offer maximum access to charging stations. It will even prompt the driver to recharge at what it determines are the most convenient locations.

Both Sync 4 systems benefit from Ford Power-Up over-the-air software updates. These also apply to other aspects of the F-150 Lightning, adding quality improvements, updates to existing features, and new features and functions.

Ford will also offer its Phone as a Key digital key technology for the F-150 Lightning, as well as a 360-degree surround-view camera system. Upgrade to Lariat trim, and you’ll get an 8-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system. The F-150 Lightning Platinum includes a high-end 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed audio system.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Competitors - Find the best Ford deals!

Numerous electric pickup trucks are in the planning, development, and finalization stages, and they’re coming from start-up companies like Rivian as well as legacy automakers, including Ford and General Motors. Naturally, Tesla is also planning an electric truck, which it will build in a new factory in Texas.

GM will be first to market with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV, but initially, only the most expensive versions of that truck will be available. Therefore, Ford’s far more affordable F-150 Lightning will be the first electric truck priced somewhere near what most people are already spending on full-size pickups.

Unless another competitor can beat them to market at a price of less than $55,000, of course.
