The 2022 X3 lineup includes rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models. The rear-drive version is called the sDrive30i, and it costs $43,700. The xDrive30i is the AWD model, priced from $45,700. A sport-tuned M40i includes standard AWD and costs $62,400. BMW charges an extra $995 to ship the X3 from the company’s South Carolina factory to your local dealership.

For the 2022 model year, BMW has discontinued the xDrive30e, the plug-in hybrid version of the X3.

You’ll be able to tell the difference between the 2022 BMW X3 and those which came before it. Take a look at the new front bumper with triangular vertical air intakes, the revised grille, and slimmer full LED headlights. Around back, new taillights with a 3D effect are standard, along with a redesigned bumper and exhaust outlet.

BMW finishes the 2022 X3’s exterior trim in standard satin aluminum and pearlescent chrome, while an optional Shadowline Package swaps those elements out for high-gloss black trim. New standard 19-inch aluminum wheels wear all-season run-flat tires, while a new available aerodynamic wheel design reduces both fuel consumption and, in turn, CO2 emissions, according to BMW.

Install the M Sport Package, and the 2022 X3 adds a sporty, aggressive look with larger front air intakes, a more prominent rear diffuser, a specific 19-inch wheel design, and M sport brakes with red or blue calipers. Optional wheels measure 20 inches or 21 inches in diameter.

The X3 M40i model gets an exclusive grille design, M logos, black side mirror caps, a unique exhaust finisher, and M light-alloy 19-inch wheels with optional 20- or 21-inch rims available as an option.

New paint colors for 2022 include Brooklyn Gray and Tanzanite Blue II.

Inside, the 2022 X3 features a new center console design inspired by the BMW 4 Series model, and the automaker models the “control island” on its surface after what you’d find in a BMW 3 Series.

Standard equipment includes triple-zone climate control, upgraded ambient lighting that helps to communicate notifications to occupants, and new perforated SensaTec leatherette upholstery. Leather remains available.

BMW continues to offer a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in the X3 sDrive30i and X3 xDrive30i models. According to BMW, it makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and accelerates the SUV to 60 mph in about six seconds.

The X3 M40i keeps its turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine, generating 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. By BMW’s stopwatch, this engine scoots the X3 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

For 2022, the M40i gains 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain technology. It equips the SUV with a 48-volt starter/generator and a 48-volt battery that automatically recharges through brake energy recuperation when the X3 M40i is coasting or stopping. The 48-volt battery powers the 12-volt electrical system and other vehicle functions.

Additionally, this new mild-hybrid system can add 11 extra horsepower through an electric boost function during acceleration. BMW says it makes the SUV feel more responsive when accelerating from a stop and offers quicker speed build-up for situations such as passing.

The new 48-volt mild-hybrid technology also improves fuel efficiency, allowing the engine to turn off more frequently when the SUV is coasting to a stop. The powertrain’s “gliding” function operates at speeds between 15 mph and 99 mph, turning the engine off in certain situations, such as when coasting down a hill. The 48-volt motor/generator also makes the automatic engine stop/start system smoother and less noticeable to the driver and passengers.

Safety Systems - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW X3 has standard forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a blind-spot warning system with active collision avoidance technology.

BMW says it has updated the SUV’s optional Driving Assistant Professional package. It now includes adaptive cruise with stop-and-go capability, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, front cross-traffic warning, and evasive-steering assistance.

This package gives the X3 a sophisticated Level 2 advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) that can even change lanes for the driver upon signaling such intent. The technology automatically checks to make sure the move is safe and executes the lane change. This system remains, however, a hands-on driving aid. It’s not quite up to Cadillac SuperCruise specification.

Additionally, BMW adds its backup assistance system to the X3’s optional Parking Assistance package. This feature essentially retraces the SUV’s path into a tight parking space while reversing, following the exact steering movements the driver made to enter the space.

BMW also says the 2022 X3 comes with an Assisted View 3D representation of ADAS activity. It shows the X3, the active ADAS, and surrounding vehicles.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best BMW deals!

The standard instrumentation and infotainment system in the 2022 BMW X3 is called Live Cockpit Plus. It includes a new 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display running a more advanced iDrive 7 operating system. This technology replaces last year’s standard iDrive 6 setup.

Thanks to iDrive 7, X3 owners benefit from added personalization of displays and content shown, an improved user experience, expanded access to connected services, and more.

Live Cockpit Professional is an option, installing a 10.25-inch digital instrumentation panel and a larger 12.3-inch iDrive 7 touchscreen display. This setup includes a next-generation navigation system with cloud-based BMW Maps. Highlights include enhanced destination input, faster programming, dynamic route calculation (with the arrival time taking traffic into account), improved and expanded traffic data, upgraded point-of-interest information, and more comprehensive Connected Parking information.

BMW also lists Amazon Alexa compatibility as a new feature for 2022.

2022 BMW X3 Competitors - Find the best BMW deals!

The 2022 BMW X3 competes in one of the hottest luxury segments. The compact SUV’s primary competition includes the Audi Q5, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Range Rover Velar, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60.

Last year, the BMW X3 outsold them all. In fact, it was the best-selling vehicle in its segment, bar none. The changes for the 2022 BMW X3 should help to ensure its continued success.
