Introduction - Find the best Ram deals!

What is the fastest pickup truck in the world? According to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, it’s the new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, which accelerates to 60 mph in a claimed 4.5 seconds thanks to a 702-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine.

Available only in crew-cab, shortbed form, the new 2021 Ram TRX price starts at $69,995, plus a destination charge of $1,695 to ship it from the Sterling Heights, Michigan factory. Dealers can start ordering the truck on August 18, 2020, and Ram says it will build as many TRXs as necessary to meet demand.

There will, however, also be a limited-production run of the TRX Launch Edition. Ram will build just 702 examples this version, which is painted in an exclusive Anvil Gray color. It comes loaded with equipment and includes a special red and brushed aluminum center console plaque, upgraded beadlock-capable wheels, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, and much more.

Though based on the Ram 1500, the Ram 1500 TRX is 8 inches wider in terms of body width, 6 inches wider in terms of track width, and gets a small 20mm adjustment of the front axle toward the front of the truck.

With no more than a glance, it’s clear that Ram needed to install massive fender flares to cover the TRX’s new footprint. Plus, the entire front end is reworked to incorporate proper engine cooling through the redesigned grille and hood scoop, deftly integrated functional air curtains running from the headlight edges to the fender vents aft of the front wheels, and LED clearance lights integrated into the hood scoop and edges of the front bumper.

Additionally, the Ram 1500 TRX has standard black 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch all-terrain tires, a unique skid plate design, four standard tow hooks, and 5-inch exhaust outlets. The optional beadlock-capable wheels have a dark silver finish.

Two-tone paint is standard for this truck. Colors include black, white, silver, dark gray, red, and blue.

Interior Features - Find the best Ram deals!

In standard specification, the Ram 1500 TRX has vinyl and cloth upholstery with graphite accents. This material is wrapped around front bucket seats with a 25mm increase in side bolstering. Leather is available as an upgrade, and the front seatbacks include MOLLE-type attachments for gear.

The cabin features black trim and machined-finish accents, and the center console includes a TRX plaque stamped with the truck’s vehicle identification number (VIN) and key performance data. A special flat-bottom steering wheel with cast-aluminum paddle shifters, a traditional shifter on the center console, and a dashboard-mounted driving mode control bank are also new for the Ram 1500 TRX.

Upgrades include an Interior Color Accent Package with TRX Red trim, stitching, and accents. Or, you can get the Carbon Fiber Package with low-gloss carbon fiber trim and a leather-wrapped instrument panel. A performance pedal kit is also available to dress up the cabin.

Optional Features - Find the best Ram deals!

In addition to the optional interior appearance packages, Ram offers TR Level 1 and TR Level 2 equipment groups for the new Ram TRX.

The TR Level 1 group equips the truck with leather, 12-way power adjustable and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, rear underseat storage, rain-sensing wipers, and a surround-view camera system.

The TR Level 2 group builds on this with ventilated front and heated rear seats, a reclining rear seat, remote engine starting, a power tailgate release, blind-spot warning with trailer coverage, rear cross-traffic warning, front and rear parking sensors, an integrated trailer-brake controller, LED bed lighting, wireless smartphone charging, and both Off-Road Pages and Performance Pages for the infotainment system.

Further options include a 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and new trailer reverse steering control. Several safety-related features are also offered in the Advanced Safety Group.

Trailering equipment, a spray-in bedliner, rock rails, and a Ram Sport Bar with accessory lighting are also available, along with a bed-mounted spare tire rack compatible with up to a 37-inch tire.

Under the Hood - Find the best Ram deals!

A supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine powers the Ram 1500 TRX, producing 702 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 650 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm on 91-octane fuel. Yes, this is the same engine used in Dodge and Jeep Hellcats, making a little less power due to modifications necessary for this application.

In order to ensure 32 inches of water fording capability, the engine’s alternator and air intake are mounted in higher locations. The engine takes in half of its air through the hood scoop, and half through the upper portion of the grille. For the Ram TRX, the engine also gets a new deep-sump oil pan, a new exhaust manifold, and it breathes through a 3-inch dual exhaust system with a sport-tuned X-pipe and resonators. Yes, it’s loud.

An 8-speed automatic transmission, the same one used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, delivers the power to all four wheels. The Ram TRX does not have the same rotary transmission dial mounted to the dashboard as the Ram 1500. Instead, it gets a traditional shifter on the center console, freeing up space for the TRX’s expanded features and controls. Driving modes include Auto, Sport, Tow, Snow, Mud/Sand, Baja, and Custom. There is also a Valet mode.

Ram says it upgraded transfer case durability to handle the supercharged Hemi. This high-powered Ram uses the same front axle as the Ram Rebel, which has an open front differential with brake-activated wheel-spin control. In the back, a Dana 60 rear axle with a locking differential is characterized as “bulletproof” by Ram. A new propshaft and half-shafts accommodate the TRX’s substantial wheel travel.

Ram says the frame is 75% different from what’s under a stock Ram 1500, stronger and more rigid to handle the most punishing conditions. The truck’s braking, steering, and suspension components are also fortified, the latter equipped with Bilstein Blackhawk E2 active dampers, upgraded springs, wheel travel of up to 14 inches at the rear. The Ram TRX’s Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires were developed exclusively for this truck.

So, what is the end result in terms of 2021 Ram 1500 TRX performance specs? Here is the data, according to Ram:

  • Towing capacity: 8,100 pounds
  • Payload capacity: 1,310 pounds
  • 0-to-60 mph: 4.5 seconds
  • 0-to-100 mph: 10.5 seconds
  • Quarter-mile: 12.9 seconds at 108 mph
  • Top speed: 118 mph
  • Ground Clearance: 11.8 inches

Safety - Find the best Ram deals!

Ram will offer an Advanced Safety Group for the TRX, an option package containing adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and a surround-view camera system.

The surround-view camera system is also included in the TR Level 1 package, while the TR Level 2 package installs blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning. The blind-spot warning system also provides trailer coverage.

Technology - Find the best Ram deals!

Several new technologies debut on the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, including a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror that shows an unobstructed camera view of what’s behind the truck, and a helpful new trailer reversing technology that Ram says is better than what the competition offers.

Naturally, you might think all three of these new upgrades will be available across the Ram lineup. However, Ram was unwilling to confirm that. Let’s just say it’s a safe bet.

The standard infotainment system is the larger 12-inch Uconnect 4C technology from the Ram 1500, and it offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM Guardian services, and much more. It also provides Ram TRX owners with both Performance Pages and Off-Road Pages technology, which allows the driver to track specific metrics. A 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system is an option.

As part of the surround-view camera system, a forward camera with dynamic path lines can help the driver pick and choose a line over tough terrain.
