Introduction

The original 1969 Chevrolet Blazer was a new kind of SUV. Much larger than Ford’s Bronco, and featuring two doors rather than four like the Jeep Wagoneer, it was big, it was bold, it was brash, and it could tackle boulders without complaint.

2019 Chevrolet Blazer front quarter right photo Fast forward nearly 50 years and the new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer isn’t much different from established midsize crossover SUVs. It’s about the same size, holds the same number of people, and offers similar drivetrains and technologies. Plugging a gap between the Equinox and the Traverse in Chevy’s lineup, the 2019 Blazer isn’t big and it has limited boulder-bashing capability.

But with just one look, you can see that it is both bold and brash.

Exterior Features

Clearly, Chevrolet is depending on daring design to deter customers from the likes of the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, and Subaru Outback.

The automaker hasn’t officially laid out the trim lineup, but promises that each tier will have its own look in order to better distinguish between them. Chevy did share that the sporty RS, for example, has a big black mesh grille and blacked-out trim, while the upscale Premier version predictably relies on chrome to convey its stature.

Aluminum wheels are standard, sized 18 ins. in diameter. The Blazer RS and Blazer Premier will be available with wheels up to 21 ins. in size.

Interior Features

Influenced by the Camaro, the Blazer’s dashboard reflects similar themes but with more storage in the center console and glove box. The new Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system (don’t call it MyLink) sits proud atop the center of the dash, with climate controls and low-mounted air vents down below.

Five people fit into the new Blazer, which shares its platform with the Cadillac XT5 and the GMC Acadia. As with the exterior, Chevrolet plans a range of colors, trims, and materials to help differentiate the Blazer’s trim levels. A panoramic dual-pane sunroof is optional.

The Blazer RS gets Jet Black leather seats with red accents and highlights. The Blazer Premier features leather and simulated suede seats in a choice of hues. Chevrolet says it has padded the places where front-seat occupants are likely to rest or brace their knees to ensure comfort.

Speaking of comfort, new Comfort-open windows allow a Blazer’s owner to drop them using the remote key fob, allowing hot air to escape before climbing in. Some versions of the Blazer also offer automatic heated and ventilated front seats that activate with the automatic climate control and automatic heated steering wheel when an owner remotely starts the Blazer prior to driving.

Rear-seat occupants enjoy a sliding seat that maximizes rear legroom. If greater space is desired, it slides forward or folds flat to accommodate up to 64.2 cu. ft. of cargo. A new cargo management system helps Blazer owners to stay organized.

Accessing the cargo hold is easy with RS and Premier trim, thanks to the standard power hands-free rear liftgate.

Under the Hood

Each new Blazer will have a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 193 horsepower and 188 lb.-ft. of torque. As an option, a 3.6-liter V-6 is available, whipping up 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. Direct fuel injection and automatic engine start/stop aim to maximize fuel economy.

A 9-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines, feeding power to the front or all four wheels. The optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) system allows the driver to disconnect the rear axle when AWD is not necessary. The Blazer RS and Premier are available with a more sophisticated dual-clutch AWD system, Chevrolet says.

Safety

Aside from mentioning that a suite of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems would be offered for the Blazer, including adaptive cruise control for RS and Premier trims, Chevy has not divulged details on this front.

Based on an educated guess, it is safe to say that the company’s Teen Driver technology, which provides driving report cards to parents after their children have been driving the Blazer, will be standard. You can also count on a Rear Seat Reminder system, which helps to prevent hot-car child and pet deaths by reminding the driver to check the back seat before leaving the car to sizzle under the sun.

Additionally, it is also fair to expect forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. A blind-spot monitoring system is likely, too, complete with rear cross-traffic alert.

General Motors has also indicated that it would be rolling out its Super Cruise adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous driving technology to most, if not all, models by 2020. No doubt, this is likely the adaptive cruise control system Chevy mentions as an option for the Blazer RS and Premier.

Technology

Chevy replaces its MyLink infotainment system with a new Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. This same technology is offered in several Buick and GMC products, and features more modern graphics combined with an improved user experience.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, OnStar subscription services with automatic collision notification and SOS emergency calling, and an 8-in. touch-screen display are standard. Chevrolet has confirmed that wireless device charging and up to 6 USB ports will be available. Expected, but unconfirmed, upgrades include navigation and a premium sound system.

People who tow trailers will appreciate two new available technologies. Hitch Guidance uses the reversing camera display to help a driver line the Blazer up with a trailer, while Hitch View uses the available 360-degree surround-view camera system to provide a top-down vantage point while preparing to tow.
