2017 Audi A4 Allroad photo Two decades ago, Subaru dressed up a Legacy station wagon, slapped an Outback label on it, and created one of the first crossover vehicles. With the current A4 Allroad, Audi uses the same recipe but to far less success. Perhaps the redesigned 2017 Audi A4 Allroad can change that.

Exterior Features

Audi bases the new A4 Allroad on the A4 Avant station wagon, which is not sold in the U.S. market. Appropriately, given its name, the Allroad receives more rugged front and rear design elements, including silver underbody protection guards, chrome vertical grille slats, flared wheel arches in matte gray or body color, and taller roof rails.

Interior Features

Sitting nearly an inch higher than an A4 sedan, the Allroad improves occupant entry and exit due to taller seating hip points, and supplies 1.3 inches of extra ground clearance. A power liftgate is standard, with hands-free operation available as an option. Cargo volume measures 17.8 cu. ft. behind the rear seat and 53.3 cu. ft. with the rear seat folded down.

Under the Hood

In the U.S. market, the A4 Allroad will have a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 252 horsepower between 5,000 rpm and 6,000 rpm, and 273 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. A new 8-speed automatic transmission delivers the power to all four wheels through Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Audi Drive Select supplies Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency, Individual, and Off-road driving modes. An adaptive damping suspension is optional, as is a 19-in. aluminum wheel design.

Audi says that the new A4 Allroad will offer the same safety equipment as the A4 sedan. That list includes a blind-spot warning system, lane-departure warning system with lane-keeping assist, and a Pre-Sense Rear system that detects when another vehicle might collide with the Allroad.

Audi Pre-Sense City is also included. It works at speeds up to 52 mph, and groups forward-collision warning, pedestrian-detection technology, and automatic emergency braking to help reduce the chance of a collision.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone-projection technology is also available, along with wireless inductive device charging. Audi Connect subscription service supplies access to Google Earth navigation images, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, access to Twitter, local traffic reports, and more.

Additionally, the 2017 Allroad is available with a new Bang & Olufsen 3D advanced sound system with 19 speakers, as well as new Audi Virtual Cockpit instrumentation, rendered digitally in a 12.3-in. display located where the gauges normally reside.

Finally, the Allroad can be fitted with a new head-up display, and an adaptive cruise control system includes stop-and-go capability combined with a traffic jam assistant that makes it easier to deal with congestion.
