Introduction

Infiniti is in the middle of a brand transformation. You may have noticed that all of the model names have changed. You may not have noticed anything new and noteworthy in terms of the cars and SUVs themselves--aside from the debut of the Q50 midsize sedan.

That's about to change, with new Q30, Q60, and QX30 models joining the lineup in the next year or two. In advance of this new model rollout--and the expected boost in brand visibility--Infiniti has updated its aging QX50 compact crossover SUV for the 2016 model year.

Exterior Features

Calling it a "fusion of coupe and sport/utility vehicle," Infiniti has repositioned the 2016 QX50 by stretching the wheelbase 3.2 in., lengthening the body 4.5 in., and increasing ground clearance by at least half an inch. The result is a bigger luxury crossover, and the changes help to make some room at the bottom of Infiniti's SUV lineup for the new QX30 model.

Restyled front and rear bumpers, new LED running lights flanking a redesigned grille, and new side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators are the key changes to the QX50's appearance. Versions equipped with the Deluxe Touring package also get redesigned 19-in. aluminum wheels, and a new Hagane Blue paint color is available for 2016, bringing the color count to seven.

Interior Features

Thanks to the stretched wheelbase and bodywork, Infiniti has increased rear legroom by 4.3 in., rear knee room by 3.9 in., and cargo room by 2.7 cu. ft. These changes resolve chief complaints lodged against this SUV in relationship to cramped passenger accommodations and tight trunk space.

Otherwise, the QX50's interior is much the same as it was before, adding a power sunroof and heated front seats as standard equipment. Leather is also included in the base price, and buyers select between Wheat, Graphite, and Chestnut cabin colors with a choice between aluminum and Maple wood trim.

Optional Features

Options for the new QX50 are grouped into extra-cost packages. A Premium package includes an 11-speaker premium sound system, advanced climate control system with Plasmacluster air purification, and a number of other features. Select the Premium Plus package to add a navigation system with real-time traffic and weather reports, Bluetooth music-streaming capability, voice-recognition technology, front and rear park-assist sensors, and a 360-degree around-view monitor.

A Deluxe Touring package is also available once buyers have upgraded to the Premium package, adding larger 19-in. wheels, power front passenger's seat, adaptive HID headlights, and other extras. QX50s with this package can be upgraded to a Technology package containing Intelligent Cruise Control, forward-collision warning with Intelligent Brake Assist, blind-spot warning system, lane-departure warning system, and a lane-keeping assist system.

Under the Hood

A 3.7-liter V-6 engine continues to supply 325 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. of torque, driving the QX50's rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic transmission with Downshift Rev Matching and Adaptive Shift Control. An all-wheel-drive system is optional and features active torque distribution.

Safety

Standard safety equipment for the 2016 Infiniti QX50 includes a reversing camera. To obtain all of the safety systems that are available for the QX50, buyers will need to check the boxes next to every option package, a requirement to get the Technology package in which they are contained.

Technology

To stream music via Bluetooth, buyers will need to purchase both the Premium and Premium Plus option packages, which also install a hard-drive navigation system, air-purifying climate control system, and a 360-degree around-view monitoring system.
