In advance of the 2014 Chicago Auto Show, Lincoln unveils the updated 2015 Navigator, its full-size, 8-passenger luxury SUV. The new Navigator continues in both regular- and extended-length styles, the latter featuring substantially more cargo space than the former.

Exterior Features

The most noticeable change to the 2015 Lincoln Navigator is its front styling. The SUV now wears the Lincoln-signature split-wing grille design that is found on nearly all other Lincoln models. A new hood picks up the design cues established by the split-wing grille, and the new Navigator features adaptive HID headlights with LED running lights, as well as a revised power tailgate with LED taillights. A set of redesigned 20-inch machined-face aluminum wheels is standard for the 2015 Navigator, along with new welcome lighting that casts illumination on the ground below the front doors to help owners avoid puddles.

Interior Features

Changes to the 2015 Lincoln Navigator are less obvious inside the cabin. A new steering wheel wrapped in premium leather and wood is standard, and while the instrument panel retains its familiar dual-cowl design, the controls are updated and reconfigured for 2015. Standard equipment includes heated and ventilated front seats, and heated second-row captain's chairs.

PowerFold third-row seats return for 2015, and Lincoln expects the new Navigator to offer class-leading cargo volume. Regular-length models provide between 18.1 cu. ft. and 103.3 cu. ft. of space, depending on how many passengers are carried, while the longer 2015 Navigator L model delivers a minimum of 42.6 cu. ft. behind the third-row seat and a maximum of 128.2 cu. ft. of cargo volume with both rear rows folded down.

Optional Features

Select the optional Reserve package and the 2015 Navigator is equipped with 22-in. polished aluminum wheels, chrome-accented running boards, a power sunroof, ultra-premium leather covering much of the interior, and Ziricote natural-grain wood trim. Navigator buyers can also add a center console between the standard second-row captain's chairs, or replace them with a 40/20/40 split-bench seat for 8-passenger seating capacity.

Under the Hood

Those wanting a Lincoln Navigator with a 5.4-liter V-8 engine had better hurry. For the 2015 model year, the V-8 is dropped in favor of a new twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine. More powerful, more fuel-efficient, and able to tow more weight than the V-8 engine it replaces, the new Navigator with EcoBoost generates a projected 370 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission powers the rear wheels, and a Control Trac 4-wheel-drive system is optional.

Additional mechanical updates include standard electric steering, hill-start assist, hill-descent assist, and an optional Lincoln Drive Control system offering Comfort, Normal, and Sport driving modes. A Continuously Controlled Damping suspension is included with Lincoln Drive Control, delivering what the company claims is a smoother and improved ride quality compared with the outgoing model.

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator continues to offer a standard independent rear suspension with load-leveling shocks. This type of suspension design helps to maximize cargo and passenger capacity, according to Lincoln.

A new reversing camera is standard equipment for the 2015 Navigator, and buyers can opt for a blind-spot information system. The MyLincoln Touch system with Sync connectivity includes a 9-1-1 Assist feature that works whenever a paired smartphone is aboard the vehicle when the air bags deploy. In that circumstance, the paired phone automatically dials an emergency services operator to summon help following a collision. This feature does not require an extra-cost subscription.

A new passive keyless entry system with push-button starting is offered for the restyled 2015 Navigator, as well as a next-generation MyLincoln Touch connectivity and infotainment system. The MyLincoln Touch system provides traditional knobs and buttons for operating the stereo and climate control systems. A dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system is also available for the new Navigator, with monitors embedded into the front-seat head restraints.
