The Volvo C70 is a midsize 4-passenger luxury convertible with a power-retractable hardtop. It was first introduced to the U.S. market in the 1990s as a coupe, but has been strictly a convertible since 2006. At the end of 2011, it was announced that 2013 would be the final model year for which the C70 would be produced, so the future of the model is uncertain, although Volvo will continue to manufacture many other vehicles. The Volvo C70's competitors include the BMW 3 Series, Audi A5, and other luxury cars that are offered as convertibles. The 2013 Volvo C70 is offered in two models, each divided into four trim levels. The C70 T5 is the base model; the C70 T5 Inscription has a slightly more powerful engine, plus other enhancements. On either, buyers can choose the base, Premier Plus, or Platinum trim. All feature a 5-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive.

Exterior Features

The 2013 Volvo C70 is offered in black or white, or, for an additional charge, metallic light or dark blue, black, silver, or red. Standard equipment on the base model includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights with washers, fog lights, heated mirrors, and automatic wipers. The T5 Inscription adds 18-inch wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, LED running lights, and a rear spoiler.

Interior Features

Standard interior features on the Volvo C70 include dual-zone climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, 8-speaker sound system, leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 8-way power front seats. Keyless entry/ignition comes with the Premier Plus trim, and the Platinum trim adds a 14-speaker sound system and a navigation system. The Inscription model includes a sport steering wheel. Trunk space with the top up is 12.3 cubic feet; 6.0 cubic feet with the top down.

Optional Features

Many of the enhancements offered as standard on the Inscription model are available as option packages on the base T5 model. A Climate package adds heat to the front seats, as well as Volvo's proprietary air filtration system. The Dynamic package includes the larger wheels and sport steering wheel, plus upgraded headlights and a blind-spot warning system. An optional rear seat cover protects the upholstery when using the rear seat for cargo. Also available are a spare wheel cavity organizer, sport pedals, interior ski bag, wind blocker, and Polestar performance tuning software.

Under the Hood

All Volvo C70 models are powered by a turbocharged, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine rated at 227 horsepower; it produces 236 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive and a 5-speed automatic transmission are standard. With the optional Polestar Performance tuning, which is standard on the Inscription model, the engine's power gets kicked up to 250 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Volvo C70 are 19/28/22 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Standard safety features on the Volvo C70 include anti-lock brakes, active front head restraints, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A blind-spot monitoring system and other safety enhancements are optional.

To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not conducted crash tests on the 2013 Volvo C70. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the C70 received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for both frontal-offset and side-impact protection, as well as for roof strength.

Volvo's optional Polestar Performance software enhances throttle response, torque and power, according to the manufacturer, without increasing the certified fuel consumption or affecting the vehicle's original warranty. The software re-calibrates hundreds of parameters that control the engine to increase the turbocharger boost pressure, re-optimize the ignition and fuel-mapping, and re-calibrate the throttle response. Polestar Performance can be installed by any Volvo dealer.
