  • New V-6 engine
  • More fuel-efficient V-8 engine
  • New 8-speed automatic transmission
  • New air suspension
  • Updated styling and interior

The 2013 Ram 1500 is a full-size, light-duty pickup truck available in multiple configurations and trim levels. It is significantly upgraded for the 2013 model year.

Exterior Features

Though the 2013 Ram 1500 looks very similar to the current 2012 model, it is refreshed front and rear with a new grille, headlights, front bumper, and LED taillights. The hood is new, too, constructed of aluminum for incremental weight reduction.

Under the truck's skin is a new frame that's 30 pounds lighter, and the Ram 1500 features a new air suspension that lowers the truck when riding on the highway to improve aerodynamics and fuel economy, the automaker says. The company also claims the Ram 1500's coefficient of drag is .363, which is lower than the new SRT Viper.

Additional upgrades include central-locking RamBox storage bins, and the availability of a 6.4-foot cargo bed with the Crew Cab body style. Five new colors also debut for 2013.

Interior Features

Ram says the new Ram 1500's cabin features upgraded materials, improved design, and new colors. A number of new options are also available for the first time.

Optional Features

Among the optional upgrades offered for the 2013 Ram, a new Uconnect Access multi-media system with smartphone integration and an 8.4-inch color touch screen is new. The new Ram 1500 is also available with a Keyless Enter & Go system with push-button start and SmartBeam automatic-dimming headlights, and can be turned into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Under the Hood

Ram is installing a new 3.6-liter "Pentastar" V-6 engine in the 2013 Ram 1500, and it makes 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. Ram says the new V-6 is not only more powerful than the 3.7-liter V-6 that it replaces, but that it also delivers 30-percent better fuel economy.

The 2013 Ram's available 5.7-liter "Hemi" V-8 is equipped with what the automaker calls Fuel Saving Technology, including active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics and a new Auto Stop-Start system that shuts the engine down when idling at an intersection or in traffic to save fuel. Ram is claiming a 10-percent fuel economy improvement for this engine.

Helping both engines to conserve as much gas as possible is a new 8-speed TorqueFlite 8 automatic transmission, operated using a rotary knob on the dashboard. Electric steering and low-rolling-resistance tires serve as additional fuel-saving measures.

Front, seat-mounted side-impact, and side-curtain air bags are standard on the 2013 Ram, along with anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, and trailer sway control. Rear park assist and a rearview camera are available.

Let's look at how to know when you need new brakes.Look, listenThere are two ways to check for brake wear on disc brakes: by looking and by listening. First, check for wear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel's spokes. The outside pad will be pressed against a metal rotor. Generally, there should be at least 1/4 inch of pad. If you see less than 1/4 inch of pad, you may want to have your brake pads inspected or replaced.
