Introduction

The Nissan Juke is a compact crossover SUV with unique styling and positioning within the market. In 2013, a performance-tuned Juke Nismo model will go on sale.

Exterior Features

To help onlookers tell the new Nissan Juke Nismo apart from other Juke models, Nissan installs a functional aero body kit that increases downforce at the front and rear of the vehicle without adding aerodynamic drag, the company says. The Nismo model also receives a revised grille, red side mirror caps, new rear tailgate spoiler, and performance-oriented tires mounted to unique gunmetal-finish 18-inch wheels with machined lips and spoke ends.

Interior Features

To provide a sportier feel from behind the new steering wheel, the Nissan Juke Nismo gains special foot pedals, restyled gauges, revised door trim, and a new shift knob. Red-stitched suede Nismo sport seats provide better bolstering for more spirited driving.

Optional Features

Nissan has not announced options for the new Juke Nismo, except to say that it will be available with a torque-vectoring control system that is intended to improve grip and cornering capability.

Under the Hood

Like the current Nissan Juke, the new Juke Nismo is equipped with a direct-injected, turbocharged, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine. However, for this sport-tuned model, horsepower and torque are increased, though Nissan isn't saying by how much. Today's engine makes 188 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 177 lb.-ft. of torque between 2,000 and 5,200 rpm.

Speaking of torque, torque-vectoring technology will be available as an option to improve cornering and grip, and the Juke Nismo gets a modified traction control system. Revised steering is also installed for more direct response, and the suspension settings are stiffened for better handling, Nissan says.

Fuel Economy

As this preview is published, the EPA had not established fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo. The current Juke gets anywhere between 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, depending on transmission and whether it has the optional all-wheel-drive system. Premium fuel is required.

Safety

Every Nissan Juke is equipped with 6 standard air bags, traction and stability control, and 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. As a result of crash-test performance, the 2012 Juke is a "Top Safety Pick," according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and receives an overall rating of 4 stars (out of a possible 5) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
