  • New interior design
  • Upgraded technology

The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a luxury SUV based on a former military vehicle produced by Steyr-Puch in Austria. Previously, this SUV was known as the Gelandewagen, or "cross-country vehicle."

Exterior Features

If you're looking at pictures of the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class and thinking that this luxury SUV looks familiar, you're right. While the 2013 G550 features new LED running lights and new exterior mirror designs, the rest of the SUV is similar to the current model.

The new 2013 G63 AMG features greater differentiation from the G55 AMG it replaces, including a unique AMG-style grille, bespoke bumper designs, flared fenders, stainless steel running boards, brush guard, and 20-inch wheels wearing 275/50 tires and fronting red-painted brake calipers.

Interior Features

Mercedes says the 2013 G-Class has a new interior with improved materials and technologies. A new gauge cluster features a thin-film transistor (TFT) display screen, the latest version of COMAND infotainment with a color display screen, a navigation system with special off-road functions, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, voice-recognition technology, and Mbrace 2 telematics.

Optional Features

Historically, the Mercedes G-Class has been equipped with all features as standard equipment. That appears to continue for 2013, aside from a new individualization program through exclusive Designo appointments.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Mercedes G550 is equipped with a 5.5-liter V-8 engine making 388 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. A 7-speed automatic transmission delivers power to all four of the G550's wheels.

The new 2013 G63 AMG has a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine making 544 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque. An AMG SpeedShift Plus 7-speed automatic transmission harnesses and distributes the power. Mercedes says the G63 AMG accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

The G63 AMG is equipped with new ECO stop/start technology, which is active when the driver operates the SUV with the transmission's "C" mode, or "Controlled Efficiency" mode, activated. Other transmission settings include "Sport" and "Manual."

Fuel Economy

Fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class are not available as this preview is published.

For 2013, the G-Class gets new standard safety features in the form of Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control, a Blind Spot Assist system, and Parktronic parking sensors with a reversing camera. The standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system is upgraded and now includes Trailer Stability Assist and a hill-holding function. Four-wheel ventilated-disc anti-lock brakes are also included on every new G-Class.
