The Mazda 2 is the automaker's entry in the "first car" market: a budget-priced hatchback that shares a platform with another newcomer to the U.S. market, the Ford Fiesta. The Mazda 2 might also be compared with the Honda Fit. A very similar sub-compact, the Mazda Demio, has been sold outside the United States since 1996, and has also been known as the Mazda Metro, Mazda 121, and Ford Festiva. The 2013 Mazda 2 carries over unchanged from the previous year, except for the addition of a USB port. It's available in a base Sport trim or a more upscale Touring trim, with automatic or manual transmission, and front-wheel drive. Its main competitors include the Fiesta, Fit, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, and the Chevrolet Spark, among others.

Exterior Features

Six exterior colors are available on the 2013 Mazda 2, including crystal white pearl (for a slight additional charge), light blue, black, red, green, and silver. Fifteen-inch steel wheels with full covers are standard, as are fixed-intermittent front and rear windshield wipers, keyless entry, and power side mirrors. The Touring version adds halogen fog lights, and upgrades to alloy wheels. The Touring trim also features a rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tip.

Interior Features

The Sport trim of the Mazda 2 features air conditioning, power windows and locks, cloth upholstery, 60/40 fold-down rear seatback, 4-speaker sound system, USB port, and front cupholders. The Touring trim adds cruise control, a trip computer, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, upgraded cloth-trimmed seats with red piping, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Mazda 2 provides 13.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats; with those seats folded down, 27.8 cubic feet are available.

Optional Features

Options and accessories include an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, integrated Bluetooth, all-weather floor mats, rear bumper guard, wheel locks, and a cargo net. The Mazda 2 doesn't offer any packaged options.

Under the Hood

The 2013 Mazda 2's standard power plant is a 100-horsepower, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 98 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard; a 4-speed automatic is available on both Sport and Touring trim levels.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Mazda 2 are:

  • Mazda 2 with manual transmission: 29/35/32 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Mazda 2 with automatic transmission: 28/34/30 mpg


Standard safety features of note on the 2013 Mazda 2 include anti-lock front disc and rear drum brakes, stability control, traction control, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. The Mazda 2 has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the Mazda 2 a "Good" rating--its highest--in frontal-offset and roof strength tests, and an "Acceptable" rating for side-impact and rear crash protection.


Mazda is working on a new generation of automotive technologies that it calls Skyactiv. The objective is to provide high levels of driving pleasure, combined with outstanding environmental and safety performance. One of its current projects is a new-generation direct-injection gasoline engine that the maker says is the world's first mass-produced gasoline engine to achieve a compression ratio of 14.0:1. Mazda says the vastly improved engine efficiency, resulting from high-pressure combustion, delivers a 15% improvement in both fuel economy and torque, particularly in the low- to mid-range where it is most useful in practical driving situations.
