The Audi S4 is the performance version of the Audi A4: a compact luxury 4-door sport sedan based on the Volkswagen B platform. It's offered in two trim levels: Premium Plus and Prestige. The S4 competes mainly with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS F, and the BMW M5. The S4 is more powerful than the A4, and has a stiffer suspension and more standard features, as well as more aggressive styling details and sportier upholstery.

Exterior Features

The 2013 S4 is available in 10 colors. (White and black are standard; other colors are offered at an extra charge.) The exterior of the S4 has been slightly restyled for 2013, with LED running lights, a new grille, and re-shaped headlights and taillights. The front and rear fascias feature wider air intakes and sharper corners, and the hood adds a pair of lengthwise creases. The Premium Plus trim features rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming exterior side mirrors, Xenon Plus headlights, integrated rear spoiler, and 18-inch wheels with summer performance tires, which can be upgraded to 19 inches. The 19-inch wheels are standard on the Prestige trim level, and all-weather tires are available. The Prestige trim adds adaptive headlights that pivot up to 15 degrees on turns.

Interior Features

The S4 features 12-way power sport seats in black leather upholstery with inserts of black or grey, or (for an additional charge) black Nappa leather with inserts of red, brown, black, or silver. The seats include power lumbar support, extendable thigh support, integrated head restraints, and prominent side bolsters. The steering wheel and the instrument cluster of the 2013 S4 have been slightly redesigned. The Audi MMI Navigation Plus now features Bluetooth streaming audio and Audi Connect, which adds Google search and Google Earth map overlays. Standard features include a sunroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker CD audio system, plus automated 3-zone climate control and heated front seats. The Prestige trim level adds Audi Side Assist, parking system with rearview camera, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system. The trunk provides 12.4 cubic feet of storage space. With rear seats folded, total cargo space is 34 cubic feet.

Optional Features

Supplementing the Quattro AWD system, the optional sports differential delivers extra torque to the outside rear wheel in hard driving, allowing for swifter and surer directional changes, according to the automaker. Audi Drive Select is included in the package.
An adaptive damping suspension system allows the driver to fine-tune the vehicle's handling and ride quality and adapts instantly to road conditions, Audi says. Stainless steel mesh or carbon atlas inlays, and manual rear-side window and power rear window sunshades, are also available. Adaptive cruise control is optional on the Prestige trim level. The Titanium package has been discontinued for 2013.

Under the Hood

The S4's standard drivetrain consists of a 3.0-liter V-6 engine that produces 333 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive, or a 7-speed S tronic transmission, plus Quattro AWD.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Audi S4 are:

  • S4 with S tronic transmission: 18/28/21 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • S4 with manual transmission: 17/26/20 mpg

Note: The S4 requires premium fuel.

Standard safety features on the 2013 Audi S4 include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, front-seat and rear-seat side air bags, front knee air bags, and side curtain air bags. Thorax air bags are optional.

In crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the 2013 Audi S4 receives 5 stars (out of 5 stars) for overall, front, side, and rollover protection. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the S4 receives a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for all safety tests.

Audi's proprietary Quattro AWD system combines with electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering. The dynamic cornering lights pivot to provide optimum illumination on turns.
