The 2010 Kia Forte Koup is a first for the Korean automaker. Neverbefore has Kia built a 2-door coupe, and its freshman attempt atcaptivating youthful consumers looks to be right on target. The Koup isbased on the all-new 2010 Kia Forte sedan, sharing that model's generalstyling themes inside and out, as well as its underpinnings andpowertrains. With the Forte Koup, Kia has focused on providing exactlywhat young buyers want: stylish looks, good gas mileage, decent pep, room for friends, portable audio compatibility, a class-leadingwarranty, and all for what is certain to be a palatable price.

Kia provides a class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile warranty on the ForteKoup's powertrain, and offers a 5-year/60,000-mile basic limitedwarranty on the rest of the car.

If the 2010 Kia Forte Koup looks a bit familiar, you might remember theKOUP Concept that Kia rolled out in 2008. The production modelfaithfully apes the concept's design, looking not unlike a slightlybetter tailored Honda CivicCoupe. Though it's based on the Fortesedan, the Koup is a little shorter in height and length than thesedan, giving the 2-door a sportier appearance. Standard 16-inch alloywheels and body-color side mirrors with integrated turn signals makethe Koup look more upscale than its surmised price tag would indicate.

Inside, the Koup borrows liberally from the Forte sedan in terms ofdesign and décor. In terms of passenger space, Kia claims theKoup is bigger than the Honda Civic, Scion tC,and the ChevroletCobaltCoupe. Plus, it has a 12.9 cubic foot trunk, which is larger thanthatof the HondaAccord Coupe.

Model Lineup

Available in two trim levels, the 2010 Kia Forte Koup comes to marketin EX or SX spec. The EX includes features like 16-inch alloy wheels, side mirrors with turn signal indicators, sport bolstered seats, airconditioning, tilt steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. The EX also includes adriver's seat height adjuster to help ensure optimum comfort, and a6-speaker stereo with 3 free months of Sirius satellite radio. The Koupis also equipped with Bluetooth wireless communications, USB andauxiliary jacks, and the ability to control your iPod or MP3 playerthrough the audio system.

The Kia Forte Koup SX is the sportier of the two models. It gets17-inch alloys, lower profile tires, a sport suspension, unique seatupholstery, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, leather wrap for thesteering wheel and shift knob, metal foot pedals, metal-finish interiortrim, and what Kia calls a Supervision meter cluster.

Optional for both models are a power sunroof and a leather package thatincludes heated seats.

2010 Kia Forte Koup

A choice between two engines is available to buyers of the 2010 KiaForte Koup. The EX model is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder enginemaking 156 horsepower and 144 lb.-ft. of torque. It can be matched witha 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic driving the Koup'sfront wheels. It's rated to get 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on thehighway regardless of transmission choice.

The Forte Koup SX is infused with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder enginegenerating 173 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque. It's connected toa 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission with Sportmaticmanual shift mode. The Koup SX is expected to return 22 mpg city and 32mpg highway with the manual transmission and 23 mpg city/31 mpg highwaywith the automatic.

Kia provides six standard air bags for the 2010 Forte Koup: dual front, dual front side-impact, and dual side curtain air bags.
