Hyundai, the world's fifth largest automaker, introduced itself to the United States market in 1986 with a single economy car called the Excel. Although it was a sales success, quality issues gave the brand a bad name as the low-cost model was plagued with reliability problems. In an effort to eliminate the public's apprehension, the Korean automaker invested heavily in quality and design over the next decade and eventually launched several well-received models, earning industry-wide accolades. For 2009,Hyundai introduced its first all-new rear-wheel-drive sedan called theGenesis. Its platform serves as the foundation for the 2010 GenesisCoupe. In a price segment crowded with front-wheel-drive, 4-cylinder offerings, the Genesis Coupe delivers performance-oriented rear-wheel drive and the choice of 4 or 6-cylinder powerplants. The 2010 HyundaiGenesis Coupe is due in showrooms in the spring of 2009.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is covered by a bumper-to-bumper5-year/60,000-mile warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Hyundai offers roadside assistance coverage for the first 5years of ownership, regardless of mileage.

Model Lineup

There are seven different Hyundai Genesis Coupe models for 2010. Thelineup includes: 2.0T, 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Track, 3.8, 3.8 GrandTouring, 3.8 Track, and 2.0T R-Spec. The "2.0T" and "R-Spec" modelsshare the same 4-cylinder engine, while the "3.8" models feature thelarger V-6 powerplant. Standard equipment on all models includes powerwindows, locks and mirrors, automatic lights, remote keyless entry, airconditioning (with manual controls), and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio systemwith 6 speakers. Unique in this price point, all variants of the Genesis Coupe will feature Bluetooth phone connectivity, iPod/USB/Aux audio inputs, and satellite radio capabilities as standard equipment. The 2.0T Premium model adds asunroof, 360-watt Infinity audio system with 10 speakers, auto-dimmingrearview mirror, power driver's seat, and keyless proximity entry withpush-button start. The 2.0T Track model builds upon the Premium modelwith the addition of leather upholstery, 19-inch alloy wheels, upgradedBrembo brakes, track-tuned suspension, limited-slip differential, aluminumpedals, rear spoiler, HID headlamps, aero wiper blades, and fog lights.The 2.0T R-Spec model is for the dedicated enthusiast. The lightweight, high-performancederivative deletes several standard features to allow aftermarket customization and increased performance, Hyundai says.

The 3.8 V-6 models are differentiated by cosmetic trim upgrades on theexterior, standard black leather upholstery, and fully automatictemperature controls. The 3.8 Grand Touring model adds unique brownleather upholstery (replacing the black leather), power driver's seat,heated front seats, Infinity 360-watt audio upgrade, HID headlamps,backup warning system, heated mirrors, sunroof, and keyless proximityentry with push-button start. The Track model features black leatherupholstery, 19-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, track-tuned suspension,limited-slip differential, aluminum pedals, aero wiper blades and arear spoiler.


The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is offered with two different engines.The standard engine in the Turbo 2.0T model is an all-aluminum,2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. It is rated at 210 hp and 223lb.-ft. of torque. The turbocharged model is offered with a 6-speedmanual transmission or a 5-speed electronically-controlled automatictransmission. According to Hyundai, the 2.0T model will reach anelectronically-limited 137 mph. It earns EPA fuel-economy estimates of20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway (with the automatic transmission). TheV-6 model features a more powerful 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at306 hp and 266 lb.-ft of torque good for a 0-60 mph sprint in less than6 seconds with a top speed limited to 149 mph. The V-6 model is fittedwith either a 6-speed manual transmission or a ZF 6-speed automatictransmission. According to EPA estimates, the V-6 model with theautomatic transmission earns fuel-economy ratings of 18 mpg city and 26mpg highway.

All 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe models are rear-wheel drive (RWD) with asport-tuned MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and 5-linkdesign rear suspension. The steering is hydraulically assistedrack-and-pinion with engine-speed-sensitive variable assist. Thestandard brake package includes single-piston calipers clamping discbrakes at all four corners. Wheels on the standard models are 18 inchesin diameter with all-season tires. The Track model mechanical upgradesinclude a sport-tuned suspension, 4-piston Brembo calipers on largerdisc brakes, wider 19-inch wheels with performance-oriented tires, anda limited-slip differential.


All versions of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe feature advanced airbags for the driver and front passenger, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side curtain air bags. The front seats are equipped withactive front head restraints and seat belts with pre-tensioners andforce limiters. The rear seats are fitted with seat beltpre-tensioners, force limiters, and the LATCH system to simplifychild-seat installation. Standard active safety features includeelectronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, brakeassist, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system.

The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has not been crash tested by theInsurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).


In a move that is sure to please enthusiasts, Hyundai is offering alightweight Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec model with special go-fastequipment. The sole powertrain offering is the turbocharged 4-cylinderengine with a 6-speed manual transmission. Upgrades to the R-Specinclude 19-inch wheels, performance tires, Brembo brakes, track-tunedsuspension, quick-ratio steering, and a limited-slip rear differential.Deleted in the interest of saving weight is Bluetooth connectivity,automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer and steering-wheelaudio controls. The special R-Spec model is only available in threecolors: Karussell White, Bathurst Black, or Tsukuba Red. Best of all,the high-performance R-Spec model is priced $3,000 less than the leastexpensive Genesis Coupe 2.0T Track model. Look for the R-Spec inshowrooms in mid-2010.
