Now in its third generation, the race-bred 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 is the most powerful 911 ever introduced. Historically, the GT2 was based on the chassis, suspension and engine of the high-performance 911 Turbo. However, while the 911 Turbo appeals to the Grand Touring crowd, the 911 GT2 is pure supercar. To extract such performance, the GT2 foregoes all-wheel drive and many of the weighty luxury appointments found in the Turbo model. With a lower curb weight, as well as an upgraded suspension and mechanicals, the GT2 flaunts a new aerodynamic splitter and rear wing befitting its twin-turbo, 530-hp powerplant and 204-mph top speed.

Model LineupPerched at the top of the 911 hierarchy, and with the exclusivity of being the highest-performance Porsche offered for use on public roads, the GT2 offers a comprehensive list of standard equipment. A rear-wheel-drive configuration, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, is the only driveline and transmission choice. Large front air intakes, a rear wing, and special twin exhaust pipes differentiate the GT2 from lesser 911 models while adding engine cooling and downforce.

Fitted to every GT2 are Porsche's PCCB brakes. With discs made of a composite carbon fiber/ceramic material, clamped by multi-piston calipers, PCCB brakes are not only powerful, but also much less susceptible to overheating and fade when compared to common brake rotors made of iron. The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system is also standard on the GT2. Offering normal and sport mode, PASM electronically controls suspension dampening settings to offer an optimal balance between handling and ride quality. Standard wheels are 19-inch light-alloy, with high-performance sport tires in charge of keeping the 911 GT2 glued to the road.


The engine placement of every 911-from the base model Carrera to the Turbo-is slung low and behind the rear wheels. As expected, the new GT2 follows this rear-engine tradition. Based on the powerplant found in the 911 Turbo, the 3.6-liter flat-6 boxer engine is equipped with twin turbochargers. Compared to the 480 hp rating of the 911 Turbo, the larger turbochargers in the GT2 generate an engine output of 530 hp. Sharing design with the 911 Turbo and GT3, the engine in the GT2 is equipped with dry sump lubrication. This allows the engine to sit closer to the ground for better handling, and offers more consistent oil circulation during high-performance driving such as racing. This vehicle was designed for performance, and enthusiasts will not be disappointed. According to Porsche, the GT2 will run 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, onwards to a top speed of 204 mph.

While the engine architecture is shared with the 911 Turbo, it is interesting to note the GT2 offers a 50-hp advantage, yet it is up to 15 percent more fuel efficient. Porsche accomplished this through a redesign of the intake manifold that keeps the fuel/air mixture at a lower temperature, despite the increased engine output.

Exclusive to the 2008 911 GT2-and offered for the first time on a Porsche homologated for road use-is an exhaust system with a titanium muffler and tailpipes. A metal more commonly reserved for use on fighter jets, titanium offers high heat and corrosion resistance but at a much lower weight. The titanium in the GT2's exhaust is credited with a 50-percent weight savings over comparable stainless steel exhaust components.
