For 2003, Infiniti unveiled the FX crossover. It was a new type of sport utility vehicle-nearly all sport-based on Nissan's "FM" platform, which it shared with the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35. Entering a segment crowded with characterless offerings, the FX was sleek, stylish and bold. The all-new 2008 Infiniti EX35, a slightly smaller sibling to the FX models, continues the theme-with a bit more opulence inside the cabin. It is a vehicle designed to combine the look and feel of a luxury coupe with the flexibility of an SUV.

Model LineupThere are four models in the Infiniti EX lineup: EX35 RWD, EX35 AWD, EX35 RWD Journey, and EX35 AWD Journey. All share the same V-6 powerplant-the primary differences are found in the drivetrain and standard equipment levels.

The EX35 RWD is rear-wheel drive and available only with a cloth interior. The EX35 AWD adds all-wheel drive, but still features a cloth-only interior. The upgraded Journey models add leather-appointed seating surfaces, a power slide/tilt moonroof, power-folding second-row seating, auto-dimming inside mirror, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, front and rear sonar system, and auto headlamp control. Optional equipment packages are numerous and include a Premium package, Luxe Elite package, Wood Trim, Navigation package, Technology package, Luxe Style package, and roof rails.

Standard engine on the 2008 Infiniti EX35 is the fourth-generation VQ35HR 3.5-liter V-6. Shared with the Infiniti G35 sedan, it is rated at 290 hp (estimated). Redline is a high 7500 rpm. A 5-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode, Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), and Adaptive Shift Control is also standard.

There are two driveline choices; standard versions are rear-wheel drive, with the "AWD" models boasting Infiniti's acclaimed ATTESA E-TS (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel-drive system.

The front suspension of the EX35 is of an independent design, featuring double wishbones with high-performance dual-flow shock absorbers. The independent rear suspension is multi-link, likewise equipped with high-performance dual-flow shock absorbers. Aluminum alloy has been used extensively throughout the suspension to save weight, improve ride quality, and increase responsiveness. Standard aluminum-alloy wheels are 17 inches in diameter, with 18-inch wheels optional.

In addition to advanced Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Infiniti has equipped the EX35 with six standard air bags and several active safety features. Infiniti's Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) offers dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant sensors as well as side-impact supplemental air bags for both the driver and front passenger. Front and outboard rear-seat passengers are protected by a roof-mounted curtain side-impact and rollover supplemental air bag system. A tire-pressure-monitoring system (TPMS) is standard on all models.

The EX35 also features Infiniti's Lane Departure Prevention System (LDP). The system uses a small camera and microprocessor to monitor the road markings and assist the driver in maintaining position within the lane.

The standard anti-lock braking system is fitted with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). All three systems are designed to help bring the EX35 to a safe and controlled stop under adverse conditions. Infiniti's Traction Control System (TCS) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) are both standard on the new EX35. To simplify infant and child seat installation, the LATCH system is built into the rear outboard seating positions on all models.

With several innovative features, the 2008 Infiniti EX35 will not disappoint consumers looking for cutting-edge technology. Infiniti's Around View Monitor (AVM) makes its North American debut on the EX35. The system utilizes four small cameras to give the driver a "top-down view" outside the vehicle to assist during parking maneuvers. "Scratch Shield," a durable paint technology designed to maintain reflectivity and gloss, is also making its debut in this marketplace.

Through a process of combining conventional clearcoat paint with a special highly elastic resin, Infiniti has developed a paint finish that is able to self-repair fine scratches over time. Also, Infiniti Intelligent Key is standard, with Bluetooth hand-free phone system, XM satellite radio, Intelligent Cruise Control, and RearView Monitor optional. Buyers with discerning ears will choose the optional Bose Premium Audio System with Burr-Brown 24-bit DAC. This 11-speaker system includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, iPod connectivity, and an available 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback.
