A newcomer that capably competes against established compact luxury sport sedan models like the Audi A4/S4BMW 3 Series, and Lexus IS, the Genesis G70 garnered acclaim from the get-go when it arrived for the 2019 model year. Rear-wheel drive? Check. Manual transmission? Check. Lusty twin-turbocharged V6 engine? Check, check, and check.

Now, the 2022 Genesis G70 gets a glow-up inside and out. Changes include:

  • Updated front and rear styling
  • New Sport+ driving mode
  • Deletion of the manual transmission option
  • Upgraded infotainment system with a larger touchscreen
  • More standard driving-assistance technology

The 2022 G70 lineup features three trim levels: 2.0T, 3.3T, and 3.3T Launch Edition. Their rear wheels drive them unless you opt for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

A turbocharged 252-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine powers the base 2.0T, and every G70 comes standard with a navigation system and a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The 3.3T amps up the athleticism with a twin-turbocharged 365-hp 3.3-liter V6, a sport-tuned suspension, and upgraded brakes.

New for 2022, the 3.3T Launch Edition includes every optional feature as standard and is available with exclusives such as its 19-inch alloy wheel design, red leather interior, and distinctive matte-finish paint job.

The Genesis G70 competes in the Compact Premium Car segment. According to data collected from verified new-vehicle buyers for the J.D. Power 2020 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, 66 percent of new Genesis G70 buyers are male (vs. 63 percent for the Compact Premium Car segment), and the median age of a G70 buyer is 56 years (vs. 55).

As part of the APEAL Study, owners rated the G70 in 10 primary categories. Listed below in descending order, you'll find their preferences from their most favorite thing about the vehicle to their least favorite:

  • Exterior styling
  • Driving feel
  • Powertrain
  • Feeling of safety
  • Setting up and starting
  • Interior design
  • Infotainment system
  • Driving comfort
  • Getting in and out
  • Fuel economy

In the 2020 APEAL Study, the G70 ranks highest out of eight Compact Premium Car models.

New Look, New Attitude

According to J.D. Power research, verified Genesis G70 owners love how the car looks, so it seems like a bad idea to dramatically change the styling. But, for the G70 to fit in with the rest of the Genesis family, heavy modifications were necessary for the 2022 model year.

In my opinion, Genesis did a terrific job with a project that could have produced disastrous results. The car's more prominent grille, bifurcated headlights, redesigned taillights, and new side air extractors enhance the G70's aggressive yet elegant demeanor.

My test vehicle arrived in Verbier White paint, which gleams despite its matte finish. Inside, the bright, quilted Sevilla Red Nappa premium leather upholstery sears the eyes, but in a good way.

Equipped with matte black 19-inch wheels, the G70 is a head-turner, even on show-off Southern California highways. The updates for 2022 give the G70 an air of mystery, generating attention everywhere it goes.

New Sport+ Mode, Goodbye to the Manual Gearbox

Fans of manual gearboxes will be crestfallen to hear that yet another one bites the dust. Genesis no longer offers a 6-speed manual transmission for the G70, most likely because people don't buy them. However, to assuage enthusiast drivers, Genesis adds a new Sport+ driving mode for the standard 8-speed automatic transmission.

Although Sport+ mode pays dividends when driving the car hard and fast, I found that if you engage this mode without sustained enthusiastic driving, it holds engine revs too long. This, in combination with the variable exhaust valve system's raucous note, simply serves to increase the amount of noise both inside and outside the car.

It's a helpful addition for specific driving situations, but most people will prefer to keep the G70 in the Comfort or Sport driving modes.

Enhanced Infotainment System

The 2022 Genesis G70 boasts a significant touchscreen upgrade, going from a standard 8-inch to a 10.25-inch display that's artfully perched atop the dashboard's center air vents.

It now offers over-the-air update capability among the system's upgrades, so you don't have to schlep it over to the dealer for software upgrades (or request that Genesis Valet come and pick it up). It includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a navigation system, and an improved wireless smartphone charging system. It performs beautifully, quickly and accurately responding to naturally spoken voice commands.

Additional technology upgrades include a head-up display that projects helpful information onto the windshield so you can keep your eyes on the road. And, if you have an Android smartphone, you can use it as a digital key to lock and unlock your doors and start the engine.

The test car also had the 15-speaker Lexicon surround-sound system, and it's impressive.

Standard Highway Driving Assist

Genesis equips every 2022 G70 with a generous list of ADAS:

New for 2022, Highway Driving Assist (HDA) is standard. HDA is a Level 2, hands-on driving aid that pairs adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance for more relaxed highway driving. It automatically accelerates and brakes to maintain a safe following distance behind traffic ahead, and the semi-autonomous steering centers the car in the lane of travel. The system can also bring the G70 to a complete stop in traffic, but the driver needs to re-engage HDA after a few seconds.

Like other Level 2 ADAS, the Genesis Highway Driving Assist system requires the driver to pay attention at all times and be ready to take over at a moment's notice.

Additionally, the 2022 G70 has a rear-seat reminder system and a Safe Exit Assist system. When you park in a parallel space, Safe Exit Assist can warn occupants when it is unsafe to open a door and exit the car.

The 2022 Genesis G70 impresses as soon as you set your eyes on it, thanks to styling updates that burnish its already good looks. Step inside, and you'll find appealing design flourishes and high-end materials.

Although its tight rear-seat space and ungenerous trunk volume might limit passenger and cargo flexibility, you'll shed yourself of such practical concerns as soon as you get it on a sinuous stretch of road.

And it's always worth noting that the Genesis G70 remains an excellent value, too, both in terms of its price tag and the ownership perks associated with the standard Genesis Concierge and Genesis Cares programs.
