2009 BMW 3 Series

The 3 Series receives a minor interior and exterior facelift for 2009, but the big news is found under the hood. For the first time in the United States, BMW will introduce a diesel powerplant in its smallest sedan. The new model is designated the 335d, and is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter diesel engine rated at 265 hp and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. BMW claims the 335d will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. According to BMW, the 50-state EPA-approved powerplant employs an innovative AdBlue injection system to keep emissions cleaner than most other diesels on the road. In 2008 EPA testing, BMW's new 2009 335d returned fuel-economy ratings of 23 mpg city/33 mpg highway. The popular 3 Series also receives the latest fourth-generation iDrive interface and software in 2009.

2009 BMW 7 Series

All-new for 2009, the fifth-generation 7 Series is the flagship of the BMW lineup. Larger and more luxurious than ever, the new sedan introduces an all-new front suspension design that is expected to trickle down to all BMW sedans, the next-generation of iDrive, and a new 400-hp twin-turbocharged engine. Equipped with the latest innovative technology, the 7 Series offers active roll bars, automatic suspension damping, and optional rear-wheel steering. The latest fourth-generation iDrive interface also debuts on the new 7 Series with a new 10.2-inch display. The 12-cylinder engine and the high-performance Alpina B7 have been discontinued for 2009.

2009 BMW X3

The smaller sibling to the BMW X5 receives new 17- and 18-inch wheels, depending on the model. Inside, new colors have been introduced for the wood trim and leather upholstery. 2009 BMW X5

The BMW X5 returns for 2009 with a new, optional diesel powerplant. Shared with the 3 Series, the X5 xDrive35d features a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 265 hp and 425 lb.-ft. of torque (the frugal engine earned 2008 EPA fuel-economy ratings of 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway). Like the BMW 335d sedan, the X5 xDrive35d injects AdBlue into the exhaust gases to reduce emissions and qualify as a 50-state EPA-approved vehicle. BMW has also made several minor feature changes to the X5 lineup for 2009. These include the addition of an iPod/USB adapter to the Premium Sound package on the xDrive48i model, heated rear seats to the Cold Weather package, and a power-operated automatic tailgate to the Premium package.
