The Friday Five:The Wrangler is Hot for Pink, Bronco is No Truck, and F-150 is Doubly Lit Edition

Beverly Braga | Aug 27, 2021

This week, Elon Musk admitted that Tesla technology isn't that great in a rare break of character, specifically referring to the automaker's Full Self-Driving mode. Huh, you don't say? What apparently is great are order banks for the 2022 Ford Maverick, which has already seen more than 100,000 hand-raisers. And those who ordered a Rivian R1T pickup? The Ford-backed company says its vehicle deliveries are on schedule.

In hopes of boosting sales, Ford added more options to the Explorer ST lineup, and the Range Rover Sport SVR gets an Ultimate Edition model.

On the reviews side, we give our expert take on the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, and we put the 2021 Acura RDX against the 2022 BMW X3 in our newest SUV comparison. We also preview new cars on the horizon with features on the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta2022 Mazda MX-30, and 2023 Acura Integra.

Looking to brush up on some tech talk? Our latest shopping guide explainers cover turbo lag and Hyundai Motor Group's Safe Exit Assist technology.

But that's not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

Jeep Wrangler Gets Hot for Pink - Find the best Jeep deals!

2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe and Wrangler Rubicon 392 Tuscadero Pink Front Quarter View

Jeep Wrangler junkies no longer need to visit the local paint shop for some custom metallic flakes. At least if you're into pink. Hot pink.

Available for a limited time, the entire Wrangler lineup is available in a new color called Tuscadero. Jeep says the color is a "deep and intense chromatic magenta." Meh. It's hot pink, y'all.

But we'll play along. "Tuscadero" is only the latest of Jeep's special-run, vibrant colors, which include Gecko, Hellayella, and Snazzberry. Tuscadero will cost an extra $395 and can be ordered now through November.

Ford Bronco Truck Plans Go Poof - Find the best Ford deals!

Off-road vehicles are no stranger to offbeat colors. Ford recently announced Eruption Green and Hot Pepper for the Bronco. But where Bronco has an extensive palette of paints, its variants will stick to 2- and 4-door options. Because the Bronco truck we didn't know was planned is no longer happening.

An Automotive News report claims that the Bronco with a bed was slated to be built alongside the Bronco SUV and Ranger pickup. But when execs concluded that perhaps there would be too much overlap with the Ranger, Ford scrapped the idea. Funny how overlapping models don't seem to bother Jeep.

In any case, Ford followers needn't worry about the loss of a truck that never was because the automaker already has the F-150Maverick, and Ranger in every powertrain variant coming soon (hi, Raptor).

Ford Forecasts for More F-150 Lightning, Doubles Production - Find the best Ford deals!

Take the F-150 Lightning, for example. Demand is so high for the battery-electric workhorse that Ford announced it is doubling production. According to Reuters, the initial target was 40,000 units.

Yet strong demand left Ford bosses "pleasantly surprised." The new expectation is more than 80,000 trucks in 2024, with plans to invest an additional $850 million to meet this new goal.

Actual sales remain to be seen. The F-150 Lightning won't be available until next year, and the gas-powered F-150 is as popular as ever. Industry analysts suggest that the majority of the initial gas-to-electric truck converts will be fleet and commercial buyers.

Genesis GV60 is First Vehicle with Wireless Battery Charging - Find the best Genesis deals!

The Genesis GV60 is the first electric vehicle to join the premium automaker's lineup. Just announced last week, the GV60 follows the design lines of its gas-fueled siblings, the GV70 and GV80.

But a new report confirms the GV60 will get some world-first fancy new tech: wireless charging. We don't mean smartphone device charging either. We mean the entire vehicle charging. Speaking with Green Car Reports, Genesis will beta test the technology in South Korea next year.

Wireless battery charging has been available as an aftermarket retrofit. With the GV60, however, Genesis becomes the first OEM to offer a factory-direct system. And because the GV60 sits on a global platform, the wireless technology has the potential to be introduced onto other models as well, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 that share underpinnings.

Confirmed: Dodge EV Concept to Debut Next Year - Find the best Dodge deals!

Like everyone else, Stellantis has EV goals, and Dodge is still part of the family lineup. Earlier this month, Dodge confirmed a plug-in hybrid would arrive next year but that an all-electric model wouldn't come to fruition until 2024. But, apparently, that doesn't mean we can't view the work in progress.

In a recent interview with Automotive News, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said the company would unveil a concept EV next year. Its electrification plans aren't without roadblocks, however, being that the heart of the market is a $40,000 to $50,000 muscle car. Kuniskis admitted that Dodge could be in a tight spot with pricing and deciding if the brand offers a mass-market car versus a small-batch variant.
