The Friday Five:The Honda Civic Price Update, Land Cruiser Cruises Out of the U.S, and New Tesla 3-Row Edition

Beverly Braga | Oct 16, 2020

This week, we covered the all-new 2022 Acura MDX and Volkswagen Taos, and the heavily updated Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. There were updates for 2021 iterations of the Ford Mustang, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima as well.

But that's not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

2021 Honda Civic Prices Announced, Sedan Drops Manual Transmission - Find the best Honda deals!

On sale now, the 2021 Honda Civic sedan is a carryover model, and pricing increases by $250 across the board — except for the Sport trim. The entry-level Civic sedan starts at $21,050 (not including the $955 destination charge), and the top-of-the-line Touring starts at $28,100. The 2021 Honda Civic Hatchback, which also is available now, sees a similar price increase.

The notable price increase is an extra $1,050 for the Civic Sport sedan, which now starts at $22,850. That's because Honda drops the 6-speed manual transmission in favor of a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The company still offers a stick shift with the Civic Sport hatchback, but every version of the sedan is now CVT-equipped.

Toyota Land Cruiser to Say Good-Bye to U.S. Market? - Find the best Toyota deals!

If the fan forum gossip proves to be accurate, 2021 will be the last year to get your hands on the Toyota Land Cruiser. The beefy off-roader has been Toyota's longest-running model line and just last year surpassed 10 million global vehicle sales during its lifetime. However, according to a Toyota dealership source, the 2021 model will be the last one available in the U.S. market.

Its production twin, the Lexus LX, will continue beyond 2021, equipped with a turbocharged V-6 instead of the current 5.7-liter V-8. The Land Cruiser was supposed to get a redesign at the same time as the LX, and that may still happen – but not for North American customers. So, this does not quite mark the end of an era, perhaps, but considering the Land Cruiser name has been around for nearly 70 years and available in the U.S. since the 1950s, the ever-capable overlander will undoubtedly be missed.

2021 Tesla Model Y Finally Gets a Third-Row Seat - Find the best Tesla deals!

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this week that production of the three-row 2021 Model Y would begin next month with deliveries starting in December. The Tesla Model Y went into production earlier this year. A three-row version of Tesla's compact crossover SUV was always in the works, but, in typical Tesla (Musk?) fashion, its timeline was rather vague. Yet, with a tweet, Musk confirmed the seven-passenger option's availability for an extra $3,000. The Tesla Model Y currently starts at $51,190 (including the destination fee) and offers a range of 326 miles.

2021 Ford Transit to Offer Newly Available Recreational Prep Packages - Find the best Ford deals!

Thanks to social distancing practices due to the ongoing Covid-19 health crisis, #vanlife has come to reflect more than just hippie-inspired transportation or rolling shelter for nomadic adventurers. Seeing an opportunity in the increased sales for personal and business use, Ford has created new options for the 2021 Transit full-size van that specifically targets those growing markets.

The 2021 Ford Transit comes with new wheel choices, color options, and improved RV-friendly packages. The Transit Motorhome Prep Package is updated to include adaptive cruise control (ACC) and an economy-rated version of the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6. A new RV Prep Package will consist of ACC, a side-sensing driver-assistance system, a heavy-duty trailer tow package, and fog lamps. The interior will feature 4-way manual swiveling driver and passenger seats and an 8-speaker sound system as standard equipment.

Also new is the Adventure Prep Package. This loaded package adds all-wheel drive, the twin-turbo V-6 engine, a limited-slip differential rear axle, a heavy-duty front axle, privacy glass, ACC, a blind-spot warning system, reverse and side-sensing systems. Additional tech comes in the form of an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual USB ports, and dual absorbent glass mat batteries, often used in RVs for their durability and efficiency.

Ford Pickups Top List of Most Stolen Vehicle in the U.S. - Find the best Ford deals!

As car sales continue to dwindle, it seems sedans can't get any love from thieves either. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, its annual "Hot Wheels" list for 2019 shows two trucks in the most-stolen top three.

Ford full-size pickups, which would include F-150 and Super Duty models, top the list with 38,938 thefts. The Honda Civic and Chevrolet full-size truck (e.g., Silverado and its ilk) round out the podium in 2nd and 3rd place. Dodge and GMC full-size pickups make top-ten appearances as well, ranking 8th and 9th, respectively.

However, when breaking things down by make, model, and model year, it's a couple of Hondas that thieves thirst for most. They stole 4,731 2000 Honda Civics and 3,563 examples of the 1997 Honda Accord. Ford pickups from the 2006 model year snuck into that top three list with 3,061 of 'em swiped from owners.
