The Friday Five:The Camaro's Final Countdown, Integra's Five Doors, and Escalade Foregoes Super Cruise Edition

Beverly Braga | Oct 01, 2021

This week, the big news from Jeep was about its smaller two-row Grand Cherokee. All-new for 2022, the Grand Cherokee will add a plug-in hybrid model to its lineup.

Ford also had a few headlines to its name. We covered why some Maverick owners are getting an AWD upgradewhere Ford will build the company's new Blue Oval electric vehicle (EV) production plants, and how badly the Mustang Mach-E failed a world-renowned evasive-handling test.

Our latest reviews are on the 2021 Land Rover Defender 90 and 2021 GMC Canyon. Plus, a new crossover comparison features the 2022 Lexus RX against the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE. And don't forget to check out our fact-finding pieces on what constitutes a Targa top and an explanation on why hydrogen is color-coded.

But that's not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

Next-Generation Acura Integra Teased as a 5-Door - Find the best Acura deals!

2023 Acura Integra Rear Quarter View Teaser

An all-new Acura Integra is coming and will arrive with a sleek fastback design. Or at least one version of it, anyway. Acura says its next-generation sports compact will feature a 5-door configuration. No word if that is its only design. The original Teggy came in 2- and 4-door hatchback forms.

Acura has so far released two teaser images. Both tightly cropped, of course. The first focuses on a handsome LED headlight that is as distinctive as it is aggressive. The most recent is a three-quarter view of the rear, showcasing that rakish rear window and LED taillights with a backward check mark that matches the front. Expect more teasers before the Integra's official debut next spring.

Rumor: Chevy Camaro Final Edition - Find the best Chevrolet deals!

Muscle cars are sure having a difficult time staying relevant—electric version or otherwise. We've previously reported that the 2024 Camaro could mark the end of the sixth-generation model and the lineup as a whole. But the fanboy forums seem to have more details of its demise.

To be offered in a farewell version dubbed the Collector's Edition or Final Edition, depending on who you ask, the 2024 model will be available only in an exclusive yellow paint, limited to 2,000 units, and available on LT, SS, and ZL1 variants. But count on unique badging and a performance boost as well. Maybe. Possibly. We guess.

Super Bummer: Cadillac Escalade Temporarily Drops Super Cruise - Find the best Cadillac deals!

The large lap of luxury that is the Cadillac Escalade will be without hands-free driving capability as Super Cruise becomes another casualty of the ongoing semi-conductor chip shortage. The Level 2 semi-autonomous advanced driving assistance system is no longer available as an option. The omission is only temporary, but General Motors offered no timetable on its return.

Super Cruise trickling down to other nameplates in the GM portfolio has not gone as smoothly as planned. From the Chevy Bolt to the GMC Sierra, the introduction of Super Cruise is on hold until at least next year.

Michigan Plans to Leapfrog Indiana in Building Wireless EV Charging Highway

This summer, Indiana began its EV-charging-via-highway pilot program, but Michigan seems to think it'll cross the finish line sooner. Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced two electric vehicle-related infrastructure projects.

One is to build enough EV charging stations at specific waypoints along the state's west coast to minimize range anxiety for road-tripping EV owners. The other is to create an in-road charging system so EVs can charge as they drive. The one-mile pilot program would take place in the greater Detroit area.

Currently in phase one, Indiana's DOT program will begin testing in a dedicated research facility before being implemented on public roads, which isn't slated for another year or two. Michigan, however, which is only in the "request for proposal" stage, plans to test on public roads almost immediately and, by default, jump ahead of Indiana.

It looks like a Midwest race to wireless EV charging has sparked.

World's Fastest EV Charging Station Claims 15 Minutes to a Full Battery

Speaking of racing to the finish, a Zurich-based tech company claims it has solved the "EV charging takes forever" dilemma.

Instead of 45 minutes to an 80-percent charge or hours-long overnight charging for a full battery, ABB has built a 360-kilowatt station that it says can charge any EV within 15 minutes. Or offer 62 miles of range in less than three minutes if you're pressed for time. By comparison, Tesla's Supercharger network offers up to 250 kW of power.

Naming the new station Terra 360, the first one will officially open in Europe by the end of this year. ABB plans to expand its super-fast charging stations to the United States, Latin America, and Asia in 2022.
