The Friday Five:The Acura Integra’s Surprise Return, Aston Martin Valkyrie’s Hyper Convertible, and Chevy Silverado EV’s Crab-Like Walk Edition

Beverly Braga | Aug 13, 2021

This week, Ford seems to giveth and taketh away. Due to a redesign, the automaker announced that Bronco orders would be further delayed if equipped with the molded-in-color hardtops. Broncos already delivered will also need hardtops replaced.

Regarding safety technologies, Lexus and Toyota unveiled a new post-collision feature. We also offer overviews on how blind-spot monitors work and what GMC Pro Safety entails.

Our latest reviews cover the newest trucks on the market—the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and 2022 Nissan Frontier. Not a truck but also getting the expert review treatment is the 2021 BMW 4 Series. Another BMW, the 2022 X3 is featured in an SUV comparison with the Lexus NX. We also previewed the Audi Skysphere concept and Volkswagen lineup updates for 2022 models.

But that’s not everything that was happening in the automotive space.

Surprise! The Acura Integra Returns! - Find the best Acura deals!

2022 Acura Integra Headlight Teaser Sketch

The Acura NSX Type S made its official, in-the-flesh debut during a Monterey Car Week reception. But to the delighted surprise of many, the NSX hybrid supercar wasn’t the automaker’s only unveil of the night.

With the help of a drone light show, Acura announced the return of the Integra. Between 1986 and 2006, the front-wheel drive, sporty-handling compact car amassed a devoted following among car enthusiast circles. To arrive toward the end of 2022, a silhouette of the vehicle hinted at a rather faithful-to-the-original 2-door hatchback shape.

Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider is the Ultimate Open-Top Hypercar - Find the best Aston Martin deals!

Also making its global debut in Monterey was the Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider. The Valkyrie Spider is an open-top version of the Valkyrie, which itself is an F1 racing-inspired sports car developed by Aston Martin and motorsports partner Red Bull Racing.

Featuring a V12 hybrid powertrain, the Valkyrie Spider has an output of 1,139 horsepower and an estimated top speed of 217 mph. Only 85 examples of the hybrid hypercar will be built. Of course, each one has already been accounted for.

Rumor: Nissan to Join Electric Truck Race - Find the best Nissan deals!

Nissan is mulling over adding a compact electric truck to its fleet. That’s the rumor, anyway. According to Automotive News, Nissan is considering a return to the small truck segment, which has become a big deal lately thanks to the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Nissan’s current truck offerings include the full-size Titan and midsize Frontier. If the automaker does move past the research phase, the new truck would be positioned below the Frontier in size and likely be all-electric.

Chevrolet Silverado Electric Truck Gets 4-Wheel Steering - Find the best Chevrolet deals!

With a carbon-neutral-by-2040 strategy in place, General Motors recently announced that the new Chevrolet Silverado electric truck will feature 4-wheel steering.

Not quite as funky as the “crab walk” feature offered on GMC Hummer vehicles, the Chevy Silverado’s Four-Wheel Steer will allow for rear-axle steering to turn all four wheels at the same time. The truck will be able to move diagonally for an even tighter turning radius.

Expected to go into production in 2023, the battery-electric Silverado is estimated to offer up to 400 miles of range.

Mercedes-Benz EQS Gets Over-the-Air Updates to Include Tetris, Sudoku - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

Sometimes, you find yourself waiting in your vehicle long enough to get bored. Should you also own a Mercedes-Benz EQS, you could pass that time by mastering your Tetris skills or breaking your brain while playing Sudoku.

This week, the first sales started in Germany, and the super-techy full-size sedan is available with super-techy full-priced over-the-air (OTA) packages. And if your EQS is equipped with the optional passenger-side screen, an available Customization package adds games like Tetris, Sudoku, Shuffle Puck, and Pairs. There’s also a multiplayer mode to battle against rear-seat gamers.

Because these aren’t service-related OTAs, there will be a price for the fun. Mercedes-Benz is offering the initial 12 months for free. Afterward, an annual subscription will cost 89 Euros, or about $105. Pricing is subject to change, of course.
