New Land Rover Defender on Sale Now in U.S. Market

Christian Wardlaw | Jun 01, 2020

Long anticipated by fans of the Land Rover brand, the Defender nameplate returns to the U.S. market after a 23-year absence. The SUV is on sale now, and prices for the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 start at $49,900 (not including destination charges). Fully equipped, a Defender 110 closes in on $105,000.

With the Defender’s return, Land Rover now offers three distinct model lines: Defender, Discovery, and Range Rover. First to arrive, the 2020 Land Rover Defender 110 is a 4-door SUV with seating for up to seven people. Later, the Defender 90 will be available, with two doors and 5-passenger capacity.

While many people will buy the Defender for its looks and image, there is substance behind the retro design. In fact, Land Rover calls the new Defender the most off-road-capable vehicle in its history. Given the marque’s past models, that’s a remarkable statement.

Standard ground clearance for the Defender 110 measures 8.6 inches, with approach, breakover, and departure angles of 30.1, 22, and 37.7 degrees, respectively. With what Land Rover calls “off-road geometry,” ground clearance rises to 11.5 inches and the approach, breakover, and departure angles improve to 38, 28, and 40 degrees. The Defender 110 maximum wading depth of 35.4 inches applies to standing water.

Buyers choose between a 296-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 395-hp turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, the latter featuring mild-hybrid technology. With the more powerful engine, the 5,000-pound Defender 110 accelerates to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, according to Land Rover. It also gets better fuel economy, earning an EPA rating of 19 mpg in combined driving (vs. 18 mpg for the turbocharged 4-cylinder).

Both engines use an 8-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels through a permanent four-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case and the company’s new Configurable Terrain Response traction system. An adaptive damping air suspension is standard.

A Defender 110 can tow up to 8,201 pounds of trailer and can carry up to 34.6 cu.-ft. of cargo behind the second-row seats. Fold the seats, and the Defender 110’s maximum cargo space measures up to 78.8 cu.-ft. in 5-passenger configuration and 69 cu.-ft. with third-row seating.
