Most Volkswagen Models Get Improved Infotainment for 2021

Liz Kim | Jul 22, 2020

Volkswagen announced that most of its 2021 model-year vehicles will feature all-new MIB3 (Modular Infotainment Toolkit) infotainment technology. The benefits of the new MIB3 system, which first debuted in VW Group’s Audi models, are significant. Highlights include dramatically improved processing power for greater functionality and faster response time to user inputs, greatly improved voice recognition technology, and support for wide-ranging choices when it comes to in-car entertainment.

One of the advantages of the Volkswagen MIB3 infotainment system is new SiriusXM 360L service that pools the content of satellite radio and streaming content. Already available in many vehicles, 360L includes more than 10,000 hours of interviews, live concerts, and other performances, accessible via the car’s touchscreen whenever the driver is ready to listen. It also allows Volkswagen owners to find their favorite team for sporting events and offers a greater breadth of broadcasts of pro and college games.

With MIB 3 and 360L’s expanded SiriusXM channel lineup, the service now includes a “For You” feature that provides recommendations based on previous choices. Individual profiles also allow several different drivers to access their favorite channels and content.

A free 3-month trial begins upon purchase of a new Volkswagen, then switches over to a user-paid subscription at the end of that term. Plans with full access to all content cost about $22 per month.

For 2021, the Volkswagen Arteon, Atlas Cross Sport, Golf GTI, Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Tiguan will feature the MIB3 infotainment system. The 3-row VW Atlas will switch from its current system to MIB3 halfway through the model year. There was no word on when, or if, the Passat sedan might receive the technology at a future date.
