Mazda Announces 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata

One hundred years ago, the Mazda brand was created in Japan. To commemorate the event, Mazda introduced a series of 100th Anniversary Special Edition versions of its cars and SUVs. But it wasn’t clear any of them were heading to the U.S. market.

Now, Mazda has confirmed that U.S. customers will be able to buy a 100th Anniversary Special Edition of the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Offered in standard convertible and available retractable fastback (RF) hardtop body styles, the base price for the soft top with a six-speed manual gearbox is $32,670, while the RF will run $35,425.

Like other special-edition Miatas, the distinctiveness of the 100th Anniversary versions is visually manifested. Both come draped in Snowflake White Pearl Mica exterior paint, with dark red leather interiors and accents throughout. Convertibles also get a dark red top. Each includes a “100 Years 1920-2020” badge, unique wheel center caps, and embroidered logos on the floor mats and headrests. Also accessorized with the logo, the car’s key fob is presented in a commemorative box.

Mazda bases the 100th Anniversary Special Edition on the top-of-the-line MX-5 Miata Grand Touring. A 181-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine motivates the car, with a choice between a standard manual or an optional automatic transmission. When you choose to row your own gears, the car also has a limited-slip differential, a front shock tower brace, Bilstein shocks, and tauter suspension tuning, all topped off with a black roof panel for the RF model.

The 100th Anniversary Special Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata will be in showrooms later this year, available in limited numbers. The automaker is also commemorating its anniversary with mugs, keychains, model cars, and books about the company’s history.
