Last Ford Fusion Sedan Rolls Off the Assembly Line in July 2020

A report by Ford Authority claims the last 2020 Ford Fusion sedan is scheduled for production on July 21, 2020. However, that date could change as Mexico begins to resume assembly at its auto factories. The Fusion is built in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

Ford announced a couple of years ago that it would halt all car production and sales in North America, except for the Mustang. Since then, the subcompact Fiesta, the compact Focus, and the full-size Taurus have all met their demise. Now, it’s the midsize Fusion’s turn.

The name is expected to return, however. Ford sells the Fusion as the Mondeo in Europe, where a handsome station wagon version roams city streets and country roads. The redesigned Mondeo wagon is rumored to be coming to America with a full Subaru Outback treatment including all-wheel drive, a raised suspension, and certainly a few SUV styling cues. Fusing the best attributes of a car and an SUV, it is expected as a 2021 or 2022 model and, given Ford’s recent naming conventions, may be called the Fusion Active.

Introduced for the 2013 model year, the soon-to-retire second-generation Fusion was a sensation upon its debut. Stylish inside and out, equipped with modern technology, and offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, the Fusion proved Ford could build a competitive midsize sedan. For a short time, there was even a Sport version with a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine and all-wheel drive.

When Ford needed to decide what the next Fusion should be, the trend among American consumers was clear. Sedans were out, and trucks and SUVs were in. That put the popular 4-door on the chopping block, and, helped along by spy photos, fueled speculation that Ford would return the nameplate on a vehicle more palatable to U.S. buying preferences.

Buick tried that with the Regal TourX, but in spite of its good looks and German design and engineering, the model never achieved success. Perhaps Ford will figure out what makes the Subaru Outback so special and deliver an appealing alternative to the aging Edge.
