Hyundai has announced the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid model that joins the redesigned 2022 Tucson, sporty Tucson N Line, and thrifty Tucson Hybrid. Hyundai expects the new plug-in hybrid version of the compact SUV to deliver 32 miles of all-electric range before switching over to traditional hybrid operation and returning an estimated 30 mpg in combined driving.

The Tucson Plug-in hybrid has a 13.8 kWh battery with more capacity than the one in its Tucson Hybrid sistership. The added capacity gives the PHEV an estimated all-electric range of 32 miles on a full charge, and it contributes to the Tucson PHEV's 70 MPGe estimated fuel economy.

Using Level 2 charging, Hyundai says you can fully recharge the Tucson Plug-in's battery in less than two hours, thanks to its 7.2kW on-board charger. Expect it to take about eight hours using a standard household electrical outlet.

One hint that the new 2022 Tucson PHEV should be fun to drive is its 261-horsepower powertrain, including a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission. With added electric-motor torque managed by the Tucson's Transmission-Mounted Electric Device (TMED), which helps smooth transitions to and from electric motor power, the Tucson PHEV promises to provide good acceleration and drivability.

The other hint is the Tucson Plug-in's e-Handling technology.

While many plug-in hybrid vehicles hang their hats on elevated fuel economy levels, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV also promises added handling precision. In addition to a specially tuned suspension, it has Hyundai's electronic e-Handling technology. In response to inputs from sensors and road conditions, the system applies both electric motor torque and braking forces to individual wheels to enhance handling response.

For instance, as the Tucson PHEV enters a corner, e-Handling applies subtle braking to the front wheels to increase their traction for improved steering response. When exiting the turn, the electric motor applies torque to the rear axle, enabling better control during acceleration out of the corner.

The multi-mode system has specialized modes for varied terrain and weather conditions, including a snow mode. Thanks in part to its AWD, the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid offers a tow rating of 2,000 pounds.
