Ford Adds Two New Packages for 2022 Mustang

Chris Teague | Oct 06, 2021

The Ford Mustang has evolved over the years from a somewhat laughable also-ran in the world of sports cars to a legitimate competitor to some of the best cars the world has to offer. The Mustang’s value and performance make it accessible to a wide variety of people. Ford is looking to capitalize on the car’s popularity with two new special-edition packages for the 2022 model year. The Mustang Stealth Edition adds black trim and unique exterior touches, while the new California Special is a throwback to a late 1960s package with the same name.

These packages won’t be standalone trim levels and will instead add to the EcoBoost Mustang and Mustang GT versions. The new Stealth Edition is available for the 4-cylinder EcoBoost-equipped Mustang Premium. It brings 19-inch black aluminum wheels, blacked-out pony badges, a performance rear wing, and clear LED taillight covers. Ford offers the package on cars with dark paint colors, including Atlas Blue, Carbonized Gray, Dark Matter, and Shadow Black.

The new California Special package is available for the Mustang GT. It includes a GT/CS side stripe that runs from the front fender to the rear fender scoop, exclusive 5-spoke 19-inch wheels, special strut tower braces, and a California Special badge on the 5.0-liter engine. The package has a rear wing for fastback cars, but convertibles get a standard spoiler delete. Interior upgrades include Miko suede-trimmed door inserts and seats, red contrast stitching, and special badging throughout.

The California Special can also be combined with the GT Performance package, which adds suspension and handling upgrades that include:

  • 19-inch wheels with Pirelli summer tires
  • Chassis tuning with heavy-duty front springs
  • Larger tubular rear sway bar
  • Lower ride height
  • K-brace
  • Strut tower braces
  • Front subframe V-brace
  • Torsen limited-slip differential
  • Tuned electric power steering

Ford has not yet released pricing details for the 2022 Mustang or any of its packages. The automaker notes that orders for the new cars, including the two new packages, will open later in 2021, with vehicles due in dealers’ showrooms by the first quarter of 2022.
