2022 Lucid Air Price Starts Below $80,000, Driving Range Above 500 Miles
Lucid Motors, a Silicon Valley-based electric vehicle startup, has fully unveiled the 2022 Lucid Air sedan. Priced from below $80,000 before factoring in the U.S. federal income tax credit of $7,500, the Air will be available in standard, Touring, Grand Touring, and Dream Edition models, each with specific power ratings and range capabilities.
Everything in the Lucid Air is new and developed in-house. By taking this approach, Lucid Motors built the exact platform, motors, batteries, technology, and software it wanted, and through this process realized several breakthroughs with regard to component size, efficiency, and packaging.
For example, the electric motors and battery pack are compact and power-dense, resulting in a spacious full-size interior, a large trunk, and a big frunk (front trunk), yet the car’s exterior dimensions remain relatively tidy. With the rear seat folded down, the all-wheel-drive Lucid Air holds as much cargo as a crossover SUV, according to the automaker.
Specifications for the standard Lucid Air, the most affordable model which goes into production in early 2022, are not final. The Air Touring starts at $95,000, provides 620 horsepower, and supplies 420 miles of driving range. Move up to the Air Grand Touring, which is priced from $139,000, and you’ll enjoy 800 horsepower and 517 miles of range on a single charge.
Before these models arrive, the Air Dream Edition will be ready for delivery in the spring of 2021. This is the fully-loaded model, generating 1,080 horsepower, providing up to 503 miles of range, and priced from $169,000. Lucid Motors says it accelerates to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, almost a second quicker than the Touring version, and whooshes through the quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds at 144 mph.
Not only does the Lucid Air accelerate fast, but its 113-kWh battery pack also recharges at a blistering rate. According to the automaker, the car’s battery soaks up 300 miles of range in 20 minutes when using a 350-kW DC Fast Charger and boasts a peak recharging speed of 1,200 miles per hour. To ensure nationwide high-speed charger access, Lucid Motors has partnered with Electrify America to provide free charging for three years.
Inside, the Air seats up to five people in a high-tech cabin using high-quality materials. A planned Executive Package will install fully reclining rear seats, allowing passengers to enjoy the spacious interior and view through the glass roof.
Designed to provide a seamless user experience, the technology employs physical and touch controls, natural voice recognition, facial recognition, and an advanced implementation of Amazon Alexa. Drivers reference a 34-inch, 5K curved glass instrumentation and infotainment display, while a smaller Pilot Panel touchscreen resides on the dashboard and retracts to reveal hidden storage inside of the dashboard.
Lucid DreamDrive bundles the advanced driving assistance systems, which are powered by 32 sensors including cameras, ultrasonics, radar, and the world’s first standard high-resolution LiDAR. The Air is designed to support Level 3 autonomous driving capability.
Lucid Motors plans to scale its operation by expanding the vehicle lineup to include the 2023 Lucid Gravity SUV with 7-passenger seating, to employ the technology in additional products such as home battery systems and backup battery storage for businesses, and to supply the technology to other companies in order for them to build their own EVs.
Production of the Lucid Air begins early next year at the automaker’s new Casa Grande, Arizona factory.
