2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition Price, Allotment Announced
If you want a special version of one of the last of the current-generation performance-tuned Civics, the 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition price starts at $44,950 (including a $955 destination charge). Only 600 examples will be available in the U.S., each with its own serial number-engraved plaque on the center console.
True driving enthusiasts are well familiar with the exploits of the Honda Civic Type R, in which Honda transforms the peppy driving characteristics of the Civic hatchback into something more sinister and more suited to racetracks than the streets.
The latest iteration of the Type R boasts a turbocharged 306-horseppower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Still, it’s one of those vehicles that doesn’t stand out much from the crowd, until it blows your doors off from a standstill. Independent publications peg the Type R’s zero-to-60 mph acceleration time at just over 5 seconds.
Appearance-wise, the new 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition pops in its exclusive Phoenix Yellow paint and contrasting gloss black roof and mirror caps. It also has a vented hood and a dark chrome Civic badge to distinguish itself from other Type Rs.
More importantly, the Limited Edition boasts performance and handling improvements. Headlining the changes is reduced weight. Lightweight 20-inch forged aluminum-alloy BBS wheels accounts for a total of 18 pounds of savings, and Honda also removes 28 pounds of sound deadening materials. Removal of other small items, like the rear heater ducts, rear wiper mechanism, and rear cargo cover, comprise the rest of the reduction.
Interestingly, in Europe, the Limited Edition also loses its climate control and infotainment systems for an additional 24-pound loss, but we Americans prefer our pocket rockets to be more civilized.
Honda also retuned the Type R Limited Edition’s Active Damper System and electrically assisted power steering to account for the lighter wheels, resulting in claimed greater precision and increased feedback. Glue-like grip is provided by Michelin Sport Cup 2 summer performance tires.
