New for 2016:Smart

Philly Murtha | Feb 18, 2016
Smart started as an idea for a city car from a Mercedes engineer in the 1970s and grew into “smart” (Swatch Mercedes ART) with the design acumen of France’s Swatch watchmaker. The first Smart small car was built in the early 1990s. Daimler Group’s Mercedes-Benz jointly redesigned the 2016 Fortwo with French partner Renault. Still built in Smartville, France, the third-generation 2016 2-seat coupe is still just 8 feet long, but 4 inches wider than the prior model. It rides on an improved platform with a revised powertrain and comes with more safety features.

Following is an overview of new or updated features for each 2016 Smart model:

  • Redesigned with four trim levels
  • 89-horsepower, 3-cylinder engine in the rear
  • Standard 5-speed manual transmission or optional automatic
  • Equipped with LED daytime running lights, power windows, cruise control, auto climate control, and Bluetooth
  • Crosswind Assist (standard) and forward-collision warning (optional) on most trim levels
  • Optional upholstery choices, new premium JBL sound system, panoramic roof, rear park assist, and touch screen available later this year
  • Selection of 40 exterior color combinations
  • Cabrio variant launches this summer in the United States with soft-top available in three colors: blue denim, red, or black
  • Cabrio soft-top opens in 12 seconds, features heated glass rear windscreen
  • New edition #1 package with design features and Lava Orange Tridon safety cell with white body panels, plus optional Sport and Lighting packages
