Christian Wardlaw | Feb 22, 2017

To measure what has gone right and what has gone wrong with 3-year-old vehicles, the annual J.D. Power U.S . Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) surveys original owners of cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans to collect information about design- and defect-related problems. After gathering and analyzing this data, J.D. Power publishes its findings in the VDS.This information is also used to calculate Power Circle Ratings for consumers to use when they shop for a vehicle. A simple, visual representation of how a vehicle performed in the VDS, compared with other models in the same segment, these Power Circle Ratings help consumers make better decisions. This Most Dependable Luxury SUVs guide includes those 2014 model-year vehicles that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for vehicle dependability after 3 years of ownership.

2014 Lexus GX

Lexus built the GX 460 on the same platform as the Toyota 4Runner, which means this is a real SUV with genuine off-roading capability. For 2014, Lexus updated the GX 460’s styling and lighting, reduced the base price, and added a new Luxury trim level to the lineup. Leatherette upholstery became standard as a part of this change, and Lexus installed a new touch-screen infotainment system and new safety systems for 2014.The 2014 Lexus GX receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2014 Lexus RX

If the rugged Lexus GX is too traditional an SUV, consider the Lexus RX, a 5-passenger crossover model that is better to drive on pavement. Available with a gasoline V-6 or a gas-electric hybrid drivetrain, the Lexus RX added Siri Eyes Free in 2014, along with minor tweaks to safety systems and a new 115-volt power outlet for the rear seat. The 2014 Lexus RX receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a dependability award in the Midsize Premium SUV segment.

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class

A compact SUV, the Mercedes GLK-Class was available with a diesel or gasoline engine and with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The GLK-Class was freshened for the 2013 model year, so the 2014 version received minor changes to option package content. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a dependability award in the Compact Premium SUV segment.

2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

A midsize 5-passenger SUV, the M-Class was one of the most popular models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Choices included the ML350 (with V-6 engine), ML350 BlueTec (with a diesel engine), ML550 (with V-8 engine), and performance-tuned ML63 AMG. In 2014, the ML350 was offered with a new Sport option package and the SUV’s infotainment display gained split-screen viewing capability from the S-Class flagship sedan. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2014 Porsche Cayenne

Historically, Porsche is a brand associated with sports cars. Today, it is just as likely to conjure up images of SUVs, and specifically the Cayenne. Adept both on the pavement and off of it, the 2014 Cayenne was available in a dizzying array of model series and offered a variety of drivetrains, including diesel and hybrid power. In 2014, the lineup added a new Platinum Edition, and the more powerful Turbo S announced in 2013 became a reality. The 2014 Porsche Cayenne receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.
