2017 Vehicle Dependability Study:Most Dependable Family SUVs

Christian Wardlaw | Feb 22, 2017

J.D. Power conducts the annual U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) to learn what design- and defect-related problems, if any, the original owners of 3-year-old cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans have experienced during the previous 12 months. The data is collected and analyzed, and after J.D. Power determines what has gone right and what has gone wrong with the vehicles, the findings are published each year in the VDS.This information is also used to generate Power Circle Ratings. The ratings summarize the VDS findings in a consumer-friendly way, providing a visual representation of how a model compares with its direct competitors. Used-car buyers can use the ratings to make smarter purchase decisions. This buyer’s guide includes those 2014 model-year SUVs equipped with 3 standard rows of seats that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for vehicle dependability after 3 years of ownership.

2014 Buick Enclave

One of the largest models in its segment, the Buick Enclave seats up to 8 people and carries as much as 115.2 cu. ft. of cargo. For the 2014 model year, Buick added a text-to-voice function for the infotainment system, installed dual USB charge ports for the second-row passengers, and debuted a forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning system. The 2014 Buick Enclave receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

In its final year of production before a complete redesign, Chevrolet added new standard equipment to the base Tahoe LS and stopped production of the Tahoe Hybrid. The big, traditional, body-on-frame SUV also earned an award for being the most dependable large SUV on the market. The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5 and receives a dependability award in the Large SUV segment.

2014 GMC Acadia

Sharing its platform and powertrain with the Buick Enclave, the GMC Acadia has a more rugged appearance even though  it sits on the same large crossover vehicle architecture. In 2014, the Acadia gained an available forward-collision warning and lane-departure system as well as dual second-row USB charging ports. The 2014 GMC Acadia receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

2014 GMC Yukon

Because the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe are identical vehicles aside from their front styling, it comes as no surprise to learn that the 2014 Yukon ranks second behind the Tahoe for dependability in this year’s VDS. Like the Tahoe, the Yukon gained standard equipment in 2014 but was otherwise unchanged in advance of a complete redesign for 2015.The 2014 GMC Yukon receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 5 out of 5.

2014 Honda Pilot

Equipped with 3 rows of seats and room for up to 8 passengers, the boxy 2014 Honda Pilot was among the larger midsize SUVs on the market when it was new. It was available in LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring trim levels, and Honda made no changes to the SUV for the 2014 model year. The 2014 Honda Pilot receives a Vehicle Dependability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.
