After its acquisition by General Motors in 2000, Swedish automaker Saab continued to impress with their line of turbocharged premium vehicles. Taking technical inspiration from the world of aviation, Saab continued to make improvements to its classic 9-3 series by introducing an advanced traction control system. This feature, is included standard on the 2001 9-3 model, maximizing grip on the road to give drivers a safer, smoother drive. The 2001 Saab 9-5 also saw marked improvements in performance, with an all-new 2.3-liter engine capable of producing up to 185 horsepower. Both models come equipped with a General Motors OnStar emergency communications system. In addition to the upgraded 9-3 and 9-5, the Saab 9-X made its debut in 2001 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The car is designed to offer drivers the ultimate crossover experience, combining the best features of a coupe, roadster, station wagon and pickup truck in the same vehicle.
