Mercedes-Benz will launch an all-new C-Class sedan as a 2008 model, thus the 2007 version is little changed. Sport and Luxury models feature new wheels, and Sport models also receive new rear spoilers, exhaust tips, and black Bird’s-eye maple interior trim. The C280 Luxury sedan gets power front seats and a steering column with a memory adjustment. The C230 Sport can run on ethanol. The C55 AMG model has been discontinued.
Overview
The C-Class is Mercedes’ midsize sedan. It had its last major renovation for the 2001 model year. Model year 2007 marks the end of that model with an all-new 2008 version scheduled to go on sale in August 2007. For 2007, the C-Class is available as the C230 Sport, C280 Luxury, and C350 Luxury models, the numbers reflecting engines of various displacements and power outputs.
The C230 has a 2.5-liter V-6 that pumps out 201 hp and turns the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. The C280 gets a 228-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 and the 7-speed automatic, or is available with a 5-speed automatic and Mercedes’ 4-Matic all-wheel-drive system. The C350 has a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic, and is available with the 5-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
Standard equipment includes electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, audio controls on the steering wheel, power windows, a tilt and telescoping steering column, cruise control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, a height-adjustable center armrest, 10-way adjustable front seats, an in-dash CD player with MP3 capability, and side curtain air bags.
The Competition
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class competes in the Compact Premium Conventional segment, which consists of 15 models. Buyers in this segment look for performance, exterior styling, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report,SM were the BMW 3 Series (120,180 units sold), Acura TL (71,348), and Infiniti G35 (60,741). The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sold 50,187 units in 2006, a decrease of 17.3 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Conventional segment include the Cadillac CTS, Lexus IS Series, Audi A4, Acura TSX, and Volvo S40/V50.
