For many homeowners, purchasing new windows and patio doors to replace old and inefficient ones is an item that sits far up the “to-do” list. In many climates, payback begins immediately with reduced heating and cooling bills and customer satisfaction with new windows and doors measured in the 2008 Windows and Patio Doors Satisfaction Study is substantial for the highest rated brands.
We analyzed responses from nearly 2,500 consumers who purchased new windows or patio doors in the previous 12 month to determine their overall satisfaction. The factors that determined that were: ordering and delivery (22%); value (21%); operational performance (15%); product quality/durability (14%); appearance and design features (12%); repair and replacement (10%); and warranty (8%).
Overall satisfaction has remained stable since 2007, and both do-it-yourselfers and consumers who hired a home improvement retailer’s installation service, a handyman or independent contractor were equally happy with their results. In fact, only one in ten consumers reported any problems at all with their windows or patio doors. One in five of those reports were related to problems with closing and locking properly.
So who do consumers rate highest? Here is the list:
- Pella is the highest ranking brand in consumer responses, scoring 794 on a 1,000-point scale. Pella products perform particularly well in five of the seven factors: operational performance; product quality/durability; appearance and design features; warranty; and ordering and delivery.
- Marvin closely follows Pella in consumer rankings with a score of 792, performing well in the value and ordering and delivery factors. Marvin posted the greatest improvement in rank position since last year 2007 of any manufacturer included in the study.
- Andersen rounds out the list of top three performers, achieving an index score of 790. Andersen performed particularly well in the warranty and repair and replacement factors.
