Hackensack University Medical Center Recognized for Providing an Outstanding Inpatient Experience For a Sixth Consecutive Year

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 19 March 2009 — Hackensack University Medical Center, a 781-bed teaching and research hospital in Hackensack, N.J., has been recognized for a sixth consecutive year for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program.SM This distinction acknowledges a strong commitment by Hackensack University Medical Center to provide “An Outstanding Inpatient Experience.”

“Hackensack University Medical Center has demonstrated a commitment to service excellence by earning this recognition for a sixth consecutive year,” said Kevin Lieb, senior director of provider programs at J.D. Power and Associates. “Patients place a high value on the service aspects of their hospital stay, so providing them with a consistently positive experience is crucial.”

The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying recently discharged patients from Hackensack University Medical Center about their perceptions of their hospital stay and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study.SM

The telephone-based research conducted among Hackensack University Medical Center patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall inpatient experience. These drivers, which were identified in the national study, are speed and efficiency; dignity and respect; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.

Hackensack University Medical Center, which was also recently recognized for service excellence in its outpatient and cardiovascular services, exceeds the national benchmark study score for overall patient satisfaction and performs particularly well, compared with the national study, in treating patients in a speedy and efficient manner. The medical center receives notably high ratings for the doctor’s coordination of care with nurses, the availability of doctors to patients, and speed and efficiency of the admission process.

Hackensack University Medical Center also performs well relative to the national study in providing patients with a comfortable stay, especially for the doctor’s concern for comfort during procedures. Additionally, nearly 70 percent of Hackensack patients indicate they have “more” or “much more” trust and confidence in the hospital after their most recent stay, and 78 percent indicate they “definitely will” return to the facility if needed.

Nongovernmental, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient, emergency department, outpatient, and maternity services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
