J.D. Power and Associates Reports: The Women’s Hospital Recognized for Providing an Outstanding Inpatient Experience
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 24 February 2009 — The Women’s Hospital, a 74-bed hospital in Newburgh, Ind., has been recognized for service excellence under the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program.SM This distinction acknowledges a strong commitment by The Women’s Hospital to provide “An Outstanding Inpatient Experience.”
“In earning this recognition, The Women’s Hospital has demonstrated the commitment to service excellence held by its doctors, nurses and staff,” said Kevin Lieb, senior director of provider programs at J.D. Power and Associates. “It is crucial for hospitals to provide patients with a consistent, positive experience.”
The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying recently discharged patients from The Women’s Hospital about their perceptions of their hospital stay and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the annual J.D. Power and Associates National Hospital Service Performance Study.SM
The telephone-based research conducted among The Women’s Hospital patients focuses on the five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall inpatient experience. These drivers, which were identified in the national study, are: speed and efficiency; dignity and respect; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support.
The Women’s Hospital exceeds the national benchmark study score for overall inpatient satisfaction. The hospital performs particularly well compared with the national study in keeping patients comfortable and treating patients with dignity and respect. The hospital also receives high ratings in emotional support, specifically in the area of compassion for serious impact of the health problems.
The hospital also performs well regarding concern for comfort during procedures and nurses’ concern about controlling pain. Patients of The Women’s Hospital are highly satisfied with the courtesy of the nurses and discharge process personnel, as well as the respect given for patients’ privacy.
Patients were asked to rate their level of trust and confidence in the hospital, and 40 percent indicated that they had a much higher level of trust and confidence in The Women’s Hospital after their recent visit, compared with 20 percent of patients who said the same in the national benchmark study.
“The fact that The Women’s Hospital is the first hospital in Indiana to achieve this prestigious national recognition is a tribute to the staff’s dedication to quality and service excellence,” said Christina Ryan, chief executive officer of The Women’s Hospital. “Since only the top 20 percent of hospitals nationwide meet the rigorous standards set by J.D. Power and Associates, this achievement by The Women’s Hospital truly places us among an elite group of healthcare providers.”
Nongovernmental, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition for inpatient, emergency department, outpatient, and maternity services. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may reapply for this recognition.
